  • All The New Food of The 2023 Florida State Fair including a Cuban Funnel Cake Sandwich!

Among the new foods at the 2023 Florida State Fair are Watermelon Sweet Tea, Mexican Street Corn Sundae, Nacho Mama, and yes, Tampa Cuban Funnel Cake. Each year, the Florida State Fair offers visitors its typical assortment of midway rides, games, agricultural exhibits, and events — including Florida's Largest Home Show and the Florida RV Supershow. What's not typical, however are the array of unique — and some might say bizarre — food offerings. This year's fair is no exception, includes a twist on a signature Florida dessert, and a dish that combines Tampa's rich history and the yearly staple that's a must for most fair-goers. Check out all this years new food below! The 2023 Florida State Fair runs from February 9 through 20, and boasts the largest Midway in the USA, a robust agricultural program, a circus, interactive animal exhibits and new attractions each year. As the first State Fair of the year, the Florida State Fair is the first to debut new and all of the unique fair foods visitors have come to know and love. It’s affordable family fun at its best. Visitors can purchase their tickets in advance on the fair's website along with select Wawa locations. All The New Food Of The Florida State Fair For 2023 Walking Nacho Dog If you're in the mood for a hot dog, this one features a bit of a kick, with jalapeño peppers, chips, and a cheese sauce. Mexican Street Corn Sundae Another Latin take on a typically American dish. It features french fries, but with a Southwestern flavor. The fries are topped with warm Chile con Queso cheese, sweet corn, cilantro lime crema, and topped with Cajun shrimp or sirloin steak. Fried Key Lime Pie Key lime purists might struggle with this one. The dessert that Florida helped make famous is served in a cup, along with bits of mini-doughnuts and a graham cracker crumble, and coated with buttercream frosting. If that wasn't sweet enough, throw in a white chocolate topping and whipped cream. Watermelon Sweet Tea If you need to wash down all of that key lime sweetness, try a sweet tea with a dose of watermelon juice. You can even make it an "Arnold Palmer" by adding some fresh-squeezed lemonade. Tampa Cuban Funnel Cake Sandwich It's everything that makes a Tampa Cuban sandwich famous — Spanish pork, smoked ham, Genoa salami, Swiss cheese, dill pickles, and mustard. But instead of being pressed inside Cuban bread, it's assembled with funnel cakes that are pressed and topped with doughnut glaze. Here's your interesting take on sweet and savory. Sweet Potato Apple Pie Here's another blend of sweet and savory. A baked sweet potato, topped with butter, cinnamon, sugar apples, and whipped cream. (Come to think of it, you may want to put this on your Thanksgiving dessert list). Nacho Mama The name might actually be more interesting than the dish itself. Nacho fans will appreciate the blend of homemade corn tortilla chips topped with tenderloin steak and everything else we love about nachos (including jalapeños, sauteed peppers and onions, green onions, nacho cheese, and ranch dressing). Mangonada If a sweet watermelon tea isn't your thing, perhaps a slushy mix of mangos topped with a sweet tangy syrup, lime tangy salt, and a spicy tamarind stick is more to your liking. Cookie Taco Supreme One definitely for the sweet-tooth and S'mores fans. A chocolate chip cookie serves as the taco shell and is filled with S'mores ice cream and topped with Oreos and a chocolate dip. And, of course, whipped cream. Cowboy Quesadilla Another Southwestern influence. This "Texas-sized" quesadilla is filled with barbecue chicken, black beans, corn, and cheese.

  • Say Hi to Phoebe - The Big Pink Flamingo at Tampa International Airport has a New Name

Did you hear the big news? The giant pink flamingo sculpture at Tampa International Airport now has a name! Hello Phoebe! Back in November, Tampa International Airport held a contest to name the 21-foot big flamingo artwork that's located in the Main Terminal of the airport. When the contest ended in early December, the airport announced that they had received over 65,000 entries! The judges worked through the more than 65,000 entries submitted from all over the world, narrowing the selections down to Cora, Finn, and Phoebe. After putting the three names to the public vote, the airport announced the news Thursday that after more than 37,000 votes were cast to find the winning name, Phoebe came out on top! The airport said that Phoebe received 16,122 votes with Cora coming in a close second at 14,341 votes. Finn finished in third place with 6,779 votes. Bryan M., a 63-year-old retired educator, submitted the winning entry and will receive 4 roundtrip tickets from Silver Airways and 4 VIP passes from Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. Construction on “HOME” was completed earlier this year, with metal panels and lighting attached to the ceiling as part of the artwork. This gives the illusion of being underwater while looking up at the flamingo This iconic sculpture has garnered international attention and was built after being chosen among more than 700 art proposals submitted from around the world. Phoebe is a sculpture by artist Matthew Mazzotta, who called the art piece "Home," "However, the story of HOME is not about whether someone or something, is originally from here or not," Mazzotta wrote. "The exaggerated scale of the flamingos in HOME puts the lives of these birds in the focus, and puts us, as humans, in awe as they tower above us, reminding us that we all share the same home."

  • Universal Orlando & Orlando's Right Rail Coalition Plan for SunRail Station Near New Epic Universe

Universal Orlando Resort and Orlando’s Right Rail Coalition has announced plans to finance, construct, and operate a SunRail station at the Orange County Convention Center, near the new Epic Universe site! In major news for Orlando tourism, and a welcome boost to the I-drive tourism district, Orlando’s Right Rail Coalition and Universal Orlando Resort today, Thursday January 5 announced significant progress toward realizing the vision of commuter rail connectivity throughout Central Florida – one of the fastest growing regions in the nation – with the creation of the Shingle Creek Transit Utility Community Development District. Through the creation of the new Shingle Creek Transit Utility Community Development District, this limited-purpose public entity will plan, finance, construct, operate, own and maintain the new Orange County Convention Center SunRail station, not only benefiting their own resort including the nearby, under construction Epic Universe, but benefiting the entire I-Drive tourism corridor. Plus, having a station at the Orange County Convention Center will boost the ability of the convention center to market itself across the globe, and thus winning new convention business. This advances a key priority for SunRail — the Sunshine Corridor Program. The program creates a commuter rail line between the Orlando International Airport and the Orange County Convention Center — expanding SunRail and connecting Central Florida communities across the region. The Sunshine Corridor will also connect residents and visitors to Brightline, the privately run intercity rail line currently serving Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and — coming in 2023 — the Orlando International Airport rail terminal. “We are one step closer to creating a multi-directional commuter rail system that benefits our entire region,” said John Sprouls, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer, Universal Parks & Resorts. “The new SunRail corridor and convention center station will make it easier for residents to get to work, the airport and to the places they love. And it will enable business growth within the International Drive area and across the region.” “The Sunshine Corridor is critical to moving our workforce. Creating a transportation network that connects our workers to their jobs, our residents to our airport, and allows our visitors to have options when they travel is essential,” said City of Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Chairman for the Central Florida Commuter Rail Commission. “We’ve known for years that connectivity between the airport and International Drive area will be essential to our entire region’s future,” said Maria Triscari, President of the International Drive Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors Orlando’s Right Rail – a coalition that advocates for an inclusive, regional mass transit plan and supports the Sunshine Corridor Program. “This new station is great news for our entire community.” Universal Orlando will pledge 13 acres of land to the District at no cost to taxpayers to be used for the convention center station with inter-modal capability and a substantial section of rail corridor. Based upon its investment in Epic Universe, Universal will also: Support the District’s financing of up to $125 million in private activity bonds to be used to fund the rail corridor and convention center station, which should allow the District to issue bonds on more favorable terms. Support the operation and maintenance of the station so there is no cost to Orange County taxpayers (currently estimated at $2 million annually). Along with its partners in the Orlando Right Rail coalition, contribute to and collectively support the District’s guarantee of $13 million in annual ticket sales for the Sunshine Corridor – the current estimated yearly operating costs for the corridor. There are more than 800 community development districts in Florida. The districts are public entities and are commonly used to help communities create needed infrastructure such as roads, water and sewer facilities and other projects traditional government bodies may not be able to finance and build.
