  • Dezerland Action Park Orlando hosting Community Event for "Larger Than Life Annual Dream Trip"

When a family receives a serious diagnosis, especially for a child, it often becomes the focus of everyday life. Dezerland Park Orlando and Larger Than Life USA are working together to give these families a day of fun. On March 20, Dezerland will host 35 children and teens, who are not currently undergoing treatment, as a part of Larger Than Life’s annual dream trip. Larger Than Life is a nonprofit organization that supports children and families in Israel throughout the healing process. Each year, the organization brings children—accompanied by caregivers, medical professionals, and family members—from Israel and other parts of the United States to Orlando. For this year’s trip, Dezerland has agreed to cover the cost of all 75 to 100 guests’ fun and food during their visit to the entertainment center. The group will enjoy a kosher meal inside Pinball Palace and a tour of the Orlando Auto Museum, which is home to more than 2,000 vehicles, including many vehicles made famous by television and movies, and the world’s largest collection of James Bond vehicles and memorabilia. Larger Than Life and Dezerland Action Park are also inviting members of the local community and other supporters of the organization to take part in the fun with a celebration in the Orlando Auto Museum. From 6 to 9:30 p.m., guests will be able to explore the museum’s extensive collection of vehicles, followed by a carnival-style party complete with concession stands in the American Classics exhibit. The event will also feature amazing entertainment, including an acrobat and a floating statue performer. • Discovery Cove celebrates Autism Acceptance Month with Renewed Autism Center Certification

In advance of Autism Acceptance Month in April, SeaWorld Orlando's DiscoveryCove has announced its renewal as a Certified Autism Center, a designation the park has proudly maintained since 2019. The first all-inclusive day resort and animal interaction park in the U.S to earn the certification from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), Discovery Cove is committed to providing an ideal setting for those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to live fully, whether as guests enjoying an unforgettable vacation experience, or as valued park employees working their dream job. As part of its ongoing commitment to providing a welcoming atmosphere for autistic guests, Discovery Cove deployed IBCCES’ specialized training for staff; created sensory guides and online resources for guests; and incorporated designated quiet spaces within the park. “We're thrilled to see the continued commitment and enthusiasm of the team at Discovery Cove to serving all guests’ needs including autistic and sensory-sensitive visitors. With the team's focus on continuous accessibility enhancements and their leadership in this industry, our programs provide long-term support and resources to ensure that all guests feel welcomed and safe during their time at Discovery Cove,” shared IBCCES board chairman, Myron Pincomb. IBCCES has been the leader in cognitive disorder training and certification for healthcare, education, and corporate professionals around the globe for more than 20 years. IBCCES is the only global credentialing board providing travel and entertainment organizations with training and certification from subject-matter experts and autistic self-advocates, and other resources, as well as long-term support that helps them understand how to better accommodate and assist autistic or sensory-sensitive visitors and their families. “The up-close animal encounters experienced at Discovery Cove changes lives forever – for our guests, but also for our team members who care for these amazing animals every day,” said Kelly Flaherty Clark, Vice President of Zoological for Discovery Cove Orlando, who also sits on the IBCCES Advisory Board and is an advocate for the community. “This certification is an indication of how hard we work to make sure these life-changing moments can be enjoyed by all guests, in particular those with ASD.” “One special moment when I was there happened when we were all swimming with dolphins, and I had unexpected balance issues when I was in the water that day. The amazing thing that happened was that every single person there just showed me no judgment. There were no stares or talking behind my back. There was just a lending hand asking - how can we help. That open communication meant the world to me. By having that awareness and education, Discovery Cove helped an autistic adult like myself have a wonderful time and take a photo with a dolphin,” shared Dr. Kerry Magro, autistic self-advocate, public speaker and author. Discovery Cove employees, known as Ambassadors, receive specialized training to ensure they have the requisite knowledge, skills, temperament, and expertise to cater to autistic and sensory-sensitive guests. The training focuses on sensory awareness, motor skills, program development, social skills, communication, environment, and emotional awareness. A downloadable IBCCES Sensory Guide provides insight on how an individual with sensory processing issues may be affected by each sense for the various experiences at Discovery Cove. In addition to the park’s wide open, clear spaces which can reduce sensory overload overall, there is a designated quiet space for additional relief from sensory stimulation. In addition to providing an appealing atmosphere for guests, Discovery Cove is an inviting workplace for those with ASD, allowing for own-pace growth, which reduces stress and pressure, and the creation of special bonds between team members and the animals. “I feel like dolphins are my kindred spirit,” said Discovery Cove Trainer Colin O’Connor. “I consider it a true blessing to have the opportunity to work in an environment where I’m able to live my dream with the challenges I face as an individual with ASD.” At a young age, Colin O’Connor’s grandfather took him regularly to SeaWorld San Diego, where he felt an immediate connection and peace – one reason he became an annual pass holder for 25 years. Now, as an employee at Discovery Cove, O’Connor calls his position as a dolphin trainer his “dream job.” Living with ASD, he appreciates having the ability to learn at his own pace, without the added pressure of having to meet specific goals within a certain timeframe. Best of all, he works with Marea, a 19-year-old dolphin, with whom O’Connor has formed a connection that is extra special. He hopes his success encourages others to follow their dreams and inspires individuals with ASD to find a place that stimulates growth and encourages development. An accredited park within the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, Discovery Cove is a tropical oasis in the heart of Central Florida offering an all-inclusive experience where guests relax in a beautiful, outdoor environment and enjoy one-on-one, inspiring animal interactions including, swimming with dolphins, snorkeling among tropical fish and rays, hand-feeding exotic birds, and much more. With reservations required and limited capacity, the experience is one of the most exclusive in the country and appreciated for its worry-free atmosphere where guests enjoy a relaxing day where everything is taken care of. In addition to inspiring animal experiences, guests at Discovery Cove enjoy an all-inclusive offering, including a freshly prepared breakfast, lunch, and all-you-can-eat snacks throughout the day, plus unlimited gourmet coffee, ice-cold beverages and beer and wine (for guests 21 and older). Private cabanas and day beds are available for an additional charge, providing enhanced privacy and seclusion. • Orlando Shakes reveal 35th Anniversary Season including Broadway Hits, New Works, and Shakespeare

Featuring a year-long celebration that includes one of Shakespeare’s funniest plays in an exciting new setting, along with vibrant, intense and dramatic works, and bookended by two Tony Award-winning musicals, Orlando Shakes in partnership with UCF has announced its upcoming productions for the 2023-2024 season – its 35th in Central Florida. “For 34 years, Orlando Shakes has entertained Central Florida audiences with some of the best comedies, dramas, and musicals ever written,” said Jim Helsinger, who will be entering his 29th season as artistic director with Orlando Shakes. “To celebrate our 35th season, what better way to do so than to produce world-class work that makes you want to laugh, makes you think, and makes you feel. This upcoming season has something for everybody.” The season will kick off in August with the foot-stomping Broadway musical production of Million Dollar Quartet, the true story of the day Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins jammed together at Sun Record Studios in 1956. In September, Shakespeare and comedy lovers alike will be transported to Mardi Gras in New Orleans for a fun-filled take on Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors, followed in October by Boulevard of Bold Dreams, a dynamic story about the night Hattie McDaniel made Hollywood history by becoming the first Black artist to win an Oscar. In December, Orlando Shakes’ holiday tradition A Christmas Carol returns to warm the hearts of the entire family. In January of 2024, the popular Fire and Reign series continues with a Bare Bard/Original Practices production of Henry VI Part I: Joan of Arc – an epic, powerful beginning to Shakespeare’s trilogy on the Wars of the Roses. In February, audiences will get lured into a world of fantasy, power, love, and seduction in a production of the Tony Award nominee Venus in Fur. Just one month later, nationally renowned actor and director Debra Ann Byrd stars in her autobiographical show, Becoming Othello: A Black Girl’s Journey. Finally, in April, the award-winning musical that pays tribute to the music of Fats Waller, Ain’t Misbehavin’, closes out the season in a sensational and upbeat celebration. “We are so excited by this lineup,” said Helsinger. “New and returning guests of Orlando Shakes have so much to choose from this upcoming season, with our seven Signature Series blockbuster productions plus our annual holiday classic, A Christmas Carol. Also, our Children’s Series returns this October with The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs!, the fun musical production of the best selling book.” Current Orlando Shakes Signature Series subscribers can renew beginning March 21, 2023 by calling 407-447-1700 or visiting the Box Office up until April 18. New subscriptions will go on sale starting April 19. Single tickets and Choose Your Own packages will go on sale on May 18. This season patrons can choose from a full Signature series of seven shows with an optional add-on of A Christmas Carol – select a Musical, Classical, or Comedy package, or design their own season package of three or five productions. SIGNATURE SERIES Million Dollar Quartet By Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux August 2-20, 2023 It was December 4th, 1956, and Sun Record Studios in Memphis, Tennessee was about to become the mecca of music for a magical moment in music history. Be witness to this true to life jam session – credited by many to be the direct influence of rock ‘n roll in the late 50s and 60s – between Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins! Come hear “Blue Suede Shoes,” “I Walk the Line,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Hound Dog” and many more! Comedy of Errors By William Shakespeare September 6-October 1, 2023 Set during the revelries of Mardi Gras and featuring New Orleans Jazz, Zydeco and Delta Blues music, Shakespeare’s non-stop hilarious farce of love, mistaken identity, and two sets of twins separated as babies – gets swept up in the carnival celebrations. Bring your Mardi Gras beads and let the good times roll! Boulevard of Bold Dreams By LaDarrion Williams October 4-29, 2023 A dynamic story about the night Hattie McDaniel (Gone with the Wind) made Hollywood history by becoming the first Black artist to win an Oscar. A story of dreamers striving to overcome considerable obstacles and fighting for recognition amidst the racism and inequity of Hollywood. Henry VI Part I: Joan of Arc By William Shakespeare January 10-21, 2024 The world whirls out of control in the thrilling tale of France’s Joan of Arc, the English warrior Talbot, and the young King Henry VI. Shakespeare’s epic, powerful beginning of the Wars of the Roses is riveting storytelling that never lets up. In this raw, “Bare Bard/Original Practices” production, Orlando Shakes’ actors will perform the play with less than 40 hours of rehearsal, no designers, and no director – just like the acting companies of Shakespeare’s time! Venus in Fur By David Ives February 7-March 3, 2024 Sexy. Provocative. Hilarious. When Vanda arrives several hours late to her audition for a play based on a nineteenth-century erotic novel, the director is less than impressed. But Vanda’s masterful performance flips the script and the audition turns into a tango for dominance between actress and director. Ain’t Misbehavin’ Conceived by Murray Horwitz and Richard Malby, Jr. April 10-28, 2024 This Tony Award winning Best Musical also won the Drama Desk award for Outstanding Musical. A sizzling celebration of Fats Waller’s music – songs that he made famous in a career that ranged from uptown clubs to downtown Tin Pan Alley to Hollywood and concert stages around the world. This delightful Broadway revue evokes the humor and infectious energy of this American original to provide an evening of humor, romance and thrilling music, including “Keepin’ Out of Mischief,” “This Joint is Jumpin’,” “Mean to Me” and title song, “Ain’t Misbehavin'”.
