- Winter Park Distillery and Blending House FORWARD/SLASH set to open on April 1
Get ready to raise a glass to Central Florida’s latest distillery and blending house, FORWARD/SLASH which is set to throw open its doors to the public on Saturday, April 1. Forward/Slash Premium Blended Whiskey has transformed a run down commercial warehouse building, located at 650 S. Capen Ave., into a stunning craft cocktail bar, tasting room, and bottle shop. Forward/Slash features a covered patio, a craft cocktail bar and tasting room, a VIP/event room for classes and private events, a blending lab, and a massive warehouse space to store and mix new products. The blending lab is where whiskies from select U.S. malt and grain distilleries will be combined to produce the company’s small-batch brand under the supervision of co-owners Tim Bradstreet and Michael Buffa. “We’re selecting aged American Whiskeys from all across the country from independent farmers and distillers and blending these incredible barrels here at our facility to create a truly unique product. We’re 100% transparent in who and where we source our whiskeys and other spirits from, giving the customer as much information as possible while simultaneously telling the story of the people who made the distillate. We tell their story through the art of blending. And blending is an artform, it is not easy, especially when it comes to working with different mash bills from different distilleries. You have to find that perfect balance and nuance in the blend so that each part can be highlighted and bring character to the final product. Like a musician playing an instrument in an orchestra.” said Bradstreet. The concept of blending might not be new but Buffa and Bradstreet aim to offer transparency through authenticity with each of their blends. Unlike many mass-marketed spirits, their labels will showcase a comprehensive ingredient list, aiming to tell the story of the distilleries and farmers behind them. In addition to blending, they will also be distilling artisan liqueurs and bitters utilizing Florida agriculture, highlighting the bountiful offerings from local farmers. Their beverage program will roll out at open with a menu of intentionally crafted cocktails. “We’re picking the best ingredients possible to make the best quality cocktails so we can create an experience for people – When you leave here, we want you to have an authentic cocktail bar experience and know what’s in your bottle. The products we are producing here are so delicious and so unique, we’re really excited to share them with everyone. ” said Buffa. With the passing of recent Florida legislation in 2021, distilleries like FORWARD/SLASH can now sell spirits for direct consumption as a tasting or in a cocktail in their tasting rooms. FORWARD/SLASH will have a grand opening at 4 pm on Saturday, April 1, with the celebrations lasting throughout the day until 11 pm. Regular bar and tasting lounge hours will be Wednesday & Thursday from 4 pm to 10 pm and Friday and Saturday from 4 pm to 11 pm. After opening, private tasting classes will begin as a means to offer a specialty guided experience into the world of distillation. - Orlando Pride unveils Highway Woman Kit, a tribute to trailblazing Florida artist Mary Ann Carroll
Orlando Pride have revealed a new kit designed in collaboration with the estate of Mary Ann Carroll, a legendary Black artist and the only woman of the iconic Highwaymen painters. The kit, presented by Orlando Health, was designed in collaboration with the estate of Carroll, a legendary Black artist and the only woman of the iconic Highwaymen painters. The Highway Woman Kit is now available for purchase at ShopOrlandoPride.com or at The Den at Exploria Stadium. “Our Club takes great pride in using our kits as a platform to share and elevate the stories of barrier-breaking women from our community” said Pedro Araujo, chief marketing officer for the Orlando Pride. “Mary Ann Carroll was one of Florida’s most talented historymakers, and we’re honored her family has allowed us to pay tribute to her and share her inspiring story with our fans and the soccer community through this kit.” “When the Pride approached me about this collaboration, it was an easy yes. My goal is to continue sharing and speaking of my mother’s legacy and the impact she made here in Florida. She was a fierce competitor who loved sports and loved seeing women succeed,” said Carroll’s daughter, Dr. Wanda Renee Mills. “The Pride players embody my mother’s spirit, and it was an honor to not only meet them, but work alongside them on this project. My mother always reminded me ‘I won’t be painted in a box, I’m too strong and talented for that,’ and these are players that will never allow themselves to be painted into a box. I’m very excited to see the team in these purple jerseys, her favorite color, on the field this season.” During the 1950s, an era of the Jim Crow South and segregation, a group of Black students became the original Highwaymen – six self-taught and self-mentoring artists who traveled throughout the state of Florida, painting and selling landscapes out of the trunk of their cars, as galleries would not feature the work of Black artists. Carroll was a member of that original troupe and the only woman in the group that grew to 26. Together, through 30 years of painting and battling racial discrimination, it is believed that the Highwaymen created over 200,000 works of art and were later inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2004. The Highway Woman Kit reintroduces an all-purple look for the Pride, with a dark purple base for both the jersey top and the shorts. As a nod to Carroll’s artistry, the main pattern of the kit is highlighted by a contrasting, lighter purple brushstroke pattern. Inspired by the Fort Pierce, Fla., native’s landscape work, the bottom of the kit features an embellishment displaying a silhouette of a Royal Poinciana tree – a favorite and familiar motif of her art – and Carroll’s signature. Returning to a full-color woven Pride crest, the Club’s Eola Blue color is also carried down into the embellishment. Orlando Health, the team’s presenting and official medical team, is proudly displayed across the front of the jersey, marking the eighth-consecutive season of partnership with the Club. The kit was unveiled on Wednesday night at the “Queen of the Road” event in downtown Orlando, which showcased many of Carroll’s artwork and items from her personal collection. The event allowed Carroll’s work to be showcased in a gallery – something that was not afforded to her or the rest of the Highwaymen during their early days – in the heart of Parramore, Orlando’s oldest, historically Black neighborhood. The complete 2023 Pride roster attended the event as well as Mills, who not only appeared in the Club’s jersey unveil video but also provided Carroll’s easel, art caddy, handwritten color wheel and her final, unfinished painting as props for the occasion. - Walt Disney World to host largest LGBTQ+ conference in the world this September
It's been announced that Walt Disney World Resort is scheduled to host what has been billed as the "largest LGBTQ+ conference in the world" later this year. Out & Equal, a group that campaigns for gay, lesbian and transgender rights in the workplace, is scheduled to hold its 2023 workplace summit at the resort, from September 11-14. The group have also revealed that Walt Disney World will host both this year's and next year's event. This is not the first time that the group have held the summit in Walt Disney World, but considering Disney's current relationship with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis who has already clashed with the company over LGBTQ rights, it will be interesting to see if the conference coming to Florida provokes a response from DeSantis. The last time the workplace summit was hosted at Walt Disney World Resort was in 2016, when it was held at the Walt Disney World Swan & Dolphin Resort months after the Pulse shooting in Orlando, where a gunman killed 49 people at the gay nightclub. According to Out & Equal's website, around 5,000 people are expected to attend its workplace summit in September, which it describes as "the preferred place to network and share strategies that create inclusive workplaces, where everyone belongs and where LGBTQ+ employees can be out and thrive. Out & Equal lists the Walt Disney Company as a top-tier supporter, along with many other major brands including Apple, Bank of America, and Uber. Other companies who supporters the organisation includes Mcdonald's, ,Pfizer, IBM, Walmart, Google and various Government bodies, including the Central Intelligence Agency and the U.S. Department of State, all of whom are expected to have a presence at the conference.
