  • Florida State University and Texas A&M to face off in 'The Battle in the Bay' in Tampa on November 28

Florida State University is playing Texas A&M University Men's Basketball here in Tampa on November 28! Tickets go on sale this Friday at 10 am. Tampa Bay will be the epicenter of college basketball as Florida State University and Texas A&M University face off in "The Battle in the Bay." The marquee non-conference matchup, organized by Russ Potts Productions, Inc., will take place at Tampa’s Benchmark International Arena on Friday, Nov. 28 at 7 pm. "The Battle in the Bay" promises an electrifying atmosphere as two of college basketball's most prominent programs collide. The Florida State Seminoles, representing the ACC, will go head-to-head with the SEC's Texas A&M Aggies in a showdown that's sure to be a must-see for fans of both schools and college hoops. “RPPI is looking forward to an exciting day of basketball in Tampa,” said RPPI President, Zach Franz. “We are grateful to work with such great partners at Benchmark International Arena, the Tampa Bay Sports Commission, Vinik Sports Group, and both Universities to deliver a top-tier event.” “Our community is excited to welcome back the upcoming edition of NCAA Men’s March Madness and this event will help our community partners prepare so that we’re ready to put our best foot forward in March,” said Tampa Bay Sports Commission Executive Director, Rob Higgins. “Kudos to RPPI for bringing together two great basketball programs for what will be a special match-up at Benchmark International Arena on Nov. 28.” The matchup features two Head Coaches leading their programs in their first season. The Seminoles, led by Coach Luke Loucks, will battle the Aggies, coached by Bucky McMillan. Both teams will be looking to secure a key non-conference victory early in the season to build their postseason resumes. “We’re working tirelessly to build a championship-caliber program for our great Florida State fans. Every game we play against a quality opponent helps us grow and become a better basketball team. Playing Texas A&M is great for us in so many ways, they were ranked in the Top 15 nationally, a No. 4 seed in last year’s NCAA Tournament, and finished fifth in the SEC -- making this matchup a powerful test for us,” said FSU Men’s Basketball Head Coach, Luke Loucks. “Playing in Tampa also gives us the chance to showcase our team in one of Florida’s largest cities, home to a vibrant community of Seminole supporters. This game strengthens our program and provides our players with valuable experience as we prepare for the rest of our non-conference slate and the upcoming ACC schedule."   The Maroon & White are led by head coach Bucky McMillan, who arrived in Aggieland last spring after leading the Samford Bulldogs to three Southern Conference Championships while averaging more than 23 wins in each of the past four seasons with the Bulldogs. The three-time SoCon Coach of the Year has re-tooled a roster that featured just a single returnee with 14 newcomers, including 12 transfers from Division I schools. Texas A&M is the only school to sign five players in the transfer portal all rated inside the Top 100 at EvanMiya.com . The Aggies are coming off their third-straight trip to the NCAA and fourth straight 20-win season in 2024-25. "We’re looking forward to participating in the Battle in the Bay in Tampa this November versus a strong basketball program in Florida State University. I have great respect for their athletic accomplishments and am excited to be starting this series,” said Texas A&M Men’s Basketball Head Coach, Bucky McMillan. “I think this year and next year’s games will be something that both fan bases can rally around. I just hope our fans leave happier than theirs.” The last time these two programs faced each other was in a close first round game of the 2011 NCAA Tournament, with FSU defeating Texas A&M 57-50. 14 years later, this neutral-site match-up has all of the components to be a thrilling event. • Orlando's new Butterfly Garden is officially open at Lake Eola Park!

The Grandmother’s Legacy of Love Butterfly Sculpture Garden is the newest addition to Orlando’s favorite park. On Sunday, September 7, 2025, the Orlando Land Trust proudly joined community members, city leaders, and families in celebrating the grand opening of the Grandmothers’ Legacy of Love Butterfly Sculpture Garden at Lake Eola Park. What began as a vision to honor grandmothers and preserve green space has now blossomed into a permanent, living tribute in the heart of downtown Orlando. The celebration opened with a magical moment: the release of dozens of butterflies into the new garden. Guests watched as the butterflies took wing, symbolizing renewal, joy, and the continuation of life’s cycles. The garden itself is thoughtfully designed with native and pollinator-friendly plants that support every stage of a butterfly’s life. From nectar-rich blooms to host plants for caterpillars, it’s a sanctuary for both butterflies and people alike. Adding to its beauty, acclaimed artist Barbara Sorensen created striking butterfly sculptures that now serve as a centerpiece for visitors to admire. “I am so honored and thrilled to have my work chosen for such a prominent, important spot in the city,” Sorensen shared. The Butterfly Sculpture Garden was made possible thanks to Orlando Land Trust’s purchase of the property at the corner of Rosalind Avenue and Central Boulevard—land that was then donated to the City of Orlando. This important step not only preserved more green space for future generations, but also created a space that embodies love, memory, and connection. As Lynn Long of the Orlando Land Trust expressed: “We purchased the property … not only to expand green space, but to make green space more beautiful.” Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer echoed that vision during the opening: “Now we’re going to have another amenity, this new butterfly garden that people will come to enjoy.” The Butterfly Garden is just one piece of a broader $60 million renovation project at Lake Eola Park, which includes improvements to the amphitheater, updated restrooms and concessions, expanded seating, landscaping enhancements, and a relocated swan marina. Together, these efforts are ensuring that Lake Eola Park remains a vibrant, welcoming destination for generations to come. The Grandmothers’ Legacy of Love Butterfly Sculpture Garden is now open to the public at Lake Eola Park. Stop by and see it today! Corner of Central & Rosalind, in front of the Sperry Fountain. • Orange County Tourist-Tax Collections in July reach Epic High, continuing to break records!

July 2025 saw tourist-tax collections in Orange County soar, hitting the highest amount collected ever for the month of July! July 2025 has been a record-breaking month in Orlando, as not only did the heat soar, Orange County's Tourist Development Tax (TDT) revenue, a 6% tax on hotels and short-term rentals soared too! Orange County Comptroller Phil Diamond announced today that Tourist Development Tax (TDT) collections received by Orange County for the July 2025 TDT collection month were $29,571,100. That is a 11.1% increase compared to July 2024. “July 2025 delivered the strongest July collections on record. Summer performance continued to heat up” said Comptroller Diamond. According to Visit Orlando, “Metro Orlando’s hotel occupancy in July grew slightly year-over-year by +0.4%, settling at 71.2%, with room demand increasing at a stronger rate of 1.3%. The Average Daily Rate (ADR) climbed to $180.87, representing a 4.2% increase over the same time period last year ($173.59). Leisure bookings led the growth, up 3.8% from last year, while group demand remained steady.” On the TDT reserve side, Renewal & Replacement Reserves (R&RR) increased by $917,559 in July. The Other Authorized Uses Reserves, which is a component of the R&RR, is currently at $154.9 million. This reserve will help offset some of the future expenses associated with recently approved projects and programs such as the Convention Center 5A expansion project (Convention Way Grand Concourse project), Camping World Stadium renovations, Arts and Application Review Committee (ARC) funding, and the UCF football stadium tower project. It is worth noting that the City of Orlando recently issued bonds for the $400 million Camping World Stadium project. The County’s first payment to the city will occur prior to November 1, 2025 in the amount of approximately $27 million. Orange County Comptroller Phil Diamond will release the August TDT collections report in early October. Orange County’s Tourist Development Tax (TDT) – sometimes called the “bed tax” – is revenue generated by a 6-percent tax on hotel stays and other short-term rentals that are less than six months in duration. The tax generates revenue to fund tourism-related projects such as the Orange County Convention Center, Camping World Stadium, and other venues. together with tourism promotion by Visit Orlando.
