  • Orlando's Renaissance Theatre shares emotional update on current closure of the non-profit theatre company

Donald Rupe, the Co-Founder of Renaissance Theatre Company has given an update the enforced closure of the theatre company. Renaissance Theatre Company, the non-profit theatre company located at 415 E Princeton St, Orlando has shared a brutally honest update on its current situation after being displaced from their building and performance space on September 19 after the City of Orlando condemned the building for safety and permitting violations connected to its sets for its annual Nosferatu production. Now nearly two month on, with the building remaining closed, founder and artistic director of Orlando's Renaissance Theatre Company, Donald Rupe has given an update on the situation, sharing that most of the Rens activity remains suspended until they can get back up and runnng again. Rupe shared that they have submitted what they hope is the permit that will allow the theater company back into their building sooner rather than later, and with the shutdown going on much longer than expected, The Ren, together with its employees are facing major financial losses. Since being shut down on September 19, The Ren have canceled 34 performances, losing roughly $488,000 in revenue, with employees losing out on about $218,000 in wages due to canceled events and shows. Rupe hopes that they can go ahead with their holiday productions, working on making up lost revenue in the months ahead, "Our hope is that we will still be able to proceed with our holiday offerings, and we are preparing for The Office Holiday Party Musical Extravaganza Show and our holiday after-party in hopes that we will get to open those shows on December 5th as planned. However, we don't feel comfortable selling tickets until we have a guaranteed place to perform." Rupe also offered an insight into the process they are having t o negotiate in order to get back up and running, " So far, we've done everything the city has asked us to do as quickly as possible, but we have found this process to be slow and painful. There are really great people in our city government who are helping us navigate things and expediting where possible, but the fact that we are unable to operate while we make these adjustments has been disastrous for our business. We wish there was a way for us to open and operate while we go through this permitting process; attempts at temporary permits, hiring a fire watch, event permits, or any other option to continue to run our business have failed, even as the city requirements are quite costly (the upgrade to our fire alarm will cost $40,000 alone)." The Renaissance Theatre Company co-founder also wanted to point out that he does not believe that the actions of the City of Orlando are politically motivated and went so far as to praise city officials who have been helping with the process. " A lot of people have asked, and I want to publicly state that we do not believe our shutdown is politically motivated in the least. In fact, I think that many people in the city would like to see us swiftly open." However, with efforts to reopen quickly dragging on, Rupe revealed that If it weren't for the generous support of Ren Co-Founder Chris Kampmeier, they would have had to cloes the doors permanently already. "Chris has been joined by 350 other generous donors, who together have given over $55,000 in donations to help keep the Ren afloat. These donations have helped to keep our staff paid despite our substantial loss of revenue." To help, fans of the Ren can still donate at rentheatre.com/donate  or through the upcoming Collaborative Campaign for the Arts through United Arts. Five Realms of Light ILLUMINATE invites guests to wander through five all-new glowing environments, each with its own story, atmosphere, and lantern creations. Here’s a Breakdown of the Brilliance: AquaLuma – Legend tells of five animal guardians who first brought light to the waters: Roa the Kiwi, Papa the Spoonbill, Wae Wae the Takahe, Kata the Kookaburra, and Ihu the Gecko. Their glowing footprints, laughter, and starlight guide explorers through arches of shimmer and radiant wildlife that still shine today. Candy Cascade Falls – A sugary dreamscape where giant gummy bear guardians awaken the forest of sweets, sparking lollipops to sprout and peppermint paths to glow. Every laugh makes the candy sparkle, every step makes the falls flow sweeter, creating a world where joy itself lights the way. Enchanted Lagoon – Said to be born of a pearl that fell from the moon, this mystical cove is home to a luminous mermaid who keeps watch over the dreams and wishes cast into her waters. Guests can take part in “Wishes by the Water,” a glowing new lantern activity where families can release their own illuminated wishes across the lagoon. Myst Wood Waters – Deep in a forest where dragonflies taught the light to dance and macaws painted the skies, a Great Tree of Light pulses with energy. Visitors can feel its heartbeat glow as they step on an interactive mat beneath the tree, activating a dazzling light display while lantern birds, bubbles, and color-shifting chameleons bring the forest alive. Rivers of Discovery – A glowing tribute to the animals that inspire and the parks that protect like SeaWorld Orlando, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, and Discovery Cove — this lantern-lit safari celebrates connection, care, and curiosity. From dolphins and flamingos to giraffes and lions, each lantern tells a story of wonder and discovery, a journey illuminated by those who care. • FAA announces flight reductions at 40 airports including Orlando and Tampa International Airports

The Federal Aviation Administration has announced it's implementing flight reductions across the country due to the government shutdown. The Federal Aviation Administration has said it would reduce flights across 40 airports as the longest government shutdown in history continues, with air traffic controllers unpaid since the shutdown began on October 1. The FAA has revealed a list of affected airports, with a phased reduction beginning at 4% of all flights, increasing to 10% by November 14. The reductions began Friday, November 6, with over 700 flights cancelled, affecting thousands of passengers across the county. Airports affected include some of the country’s busiest airports and major international hubs in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and New York City. Locally, Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Tampa International Airport (TPA) are both affected, with passengers being told to check with their airline for updated flight information. Many major airlines have already announced that they are waiving cancellation fees for all tickets, Orlando International Airport has has issued the following statement, featuring advice for passengers: "An Emergency Order by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) identified Orlando International Airport (MCO) as one of 40 U.S. airports to have flight reductions. This FAA order, in response to the federal government shutdown, is effective as of Friday, November 7, 2025. This is expected to result in fewer arrivals and departures at MCO, which should slow the rate of activity in the National Airspace System and assist airports that are experiencing staffing challenges. Ultimately, this order maintains the highest level of safety. To this point, Orlando International Airport has been fortunate that federal airport employees have continued to work and there has been minimal impact on airport operations. We deeply appreciate our federal partners for their commitment. The reduction in flights is likely to impact passengers, unfortunately, and we ask that they check directly with their airlines regarding delays and cancellations. The airport is fully staffed to assist as much as possible during this time." Tampa International Airport has also issued an update for passengers: "Tampa International Airport is closely monitoring developments following the U.S. Department of Transportation and the FAA's order restricting air traffic within 40 high-volume markets.  TPA is the 27th largest airport in the U.S. and has approximately 600 flight operations daily, which includes both commercial and private aircraft.  Airlines set flight schedules and will implement changes in coordination with the FAA. TPA does not manage flight schedules, so any changes to routes are determined and communicated by individual carriers. As always, passengers should check directly with their airlines regarding their flight." Contact Us: You can contact us here . To advertise with us, click here .
