Wekiva Island to celebrate World Rivers Day on September 27

Sustainable business will help clean, raise awareness for Wekiva River.

The Wekiva River is the reason Wekiva Island was created. On Sept. 27, the Seminole County family business will show its appreciation for that treasure with a celebration for World Rivers Day.
The event will include a day full of activities dedicated to exploring and protecting the river that connects us. The timeline includes:
River and road cleanup with Keep Seminole Beautiful. – 8 to 11 a.m. Canoes are free for those participating.
River tours with Wekiva Wild. – 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wekiva Wild will offer guests a unique way to see the special ecosystem with a boat tour.
Children’s activities with Idea Bar. – 12 to 4 p.m. Kids can enjoy hands-on activities inspired by nature, conservation and the world around us.
Live music with Lucy Spotts. – 2 to 6 p.m.
River Talks. – 5 to 6 p.m. Representatives from the Wekiva Wild & Scenic River System Advisory Committee, Florida Springs Council, Friends of the Wekiva River, and Seminole County Commissioner Lee Constantine will share more about how they are working to ensure the Wekiva remains wild and scenic for generations to come.
Wild & Scenic River Mural Unveiling. – 6 p.m. Wekiva Island will unveil the first phase of its Wild & Scenic River Mural Project, which will celebrate the river, wildlife, history and the natural landscape.
In addition to the scheduled activities, Gallery CERO, the onsite art gallery, will be open and sharing its American Tapestry exhibition. Representatives from the Wekiva Wilderness Trust will be there to enact hands-on history.
Without a Paddle Café will be serving its All-American Hot Dog Menu, and to celebrate river life, adding Catfish Baskets with hush puppies, fries and coleslaw to the menu.
“The Wild & Scenic Wekiva River is truly special. Anyone who has paddled a kayak or canoe and explored it can see that,” said Carrie Vanderhoef, Wekiva Island manager. “We’re excited to celebrate our roots at Wekiva Island with a day of fun and raise awareness about protecting the river.”
