Opera Orlando Presents

The Magic Flute

October 28 & 30, 2022

Bring the family to this enchanting and whimsical fairy tale about love and light, sacrifice and darkness, and finding one’s place in the world. Mozart’s comedic and mystical singspiel (a predecessor to musical theater) centers around gods and heroes and transports the audience to the mythical realm of Ozymandia where Tamino is pursued by a terrifying dragon. He is rescued by three ominous and seductive women, who kill the monster and task Tamino with rescuing Pamina, daughter of the awe-inspiring sorceress The Queen of the Night, from the clutches of the “evil” Sarastro. With the gift of a magic flute and magic bells, Tamino sets off on his hero’s journey accompanied by his new friend and reluctant comrade-in-arms Papageno, the bird catcher, only to quickly realize that nothing, not even night and day, is quite what it appears to be.

The story unfolds in frames like a graphic novel bringing all of the arts together to tell this fantastical tale. Artistic director Grant Preisser directs this all new production inspired by the fine art anime of Yoshitaka Amana, with dance choreographed by Maxine Montilus, puppetry by MicheLee Puppets, and music conducted by Chaowen Ting, making her Company debut. She will take the podium and lead the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, along with a stellar cast including Metropolitan Opera soprano Kathryn Bowdenas The Queen of the Night, acclaimed tenor Tyler Nelson as Prince Tamino, the stunning, up-and-coming soprano Magdalena Kuźma as Pamina, and renowned baritone Brian James Myer as Papageno.

Not to mention, each full-length record ascended to #1 on the Billboard Rock, Indie, and/or Alternative Charts with 2016’s Bad Vibrations bowing at #2 on the Billboard Top 200. They’ve put up unprecedented numbers for a rock act in the 21st century, generating 850 million Spotify streams, 500 million YouTube views, and sales of three million-plus units. The song marks the band’s first new music since their critically acclaimed 2021 album, You’re Welcome and recently entered the Top 25 at the Active Rock radio format. Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo

January 25, 2023

Known as the world’s foremost all-male comic ballet company, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo performs a full range of the ballet and modern dance repertoire, including classical and original works in faithful renditions of the manners and conceits of those dance styles. Their comedy is achieved by incorporating and exaggerating the foibles, accidents, and underlying incongruities of serious dance.

The fact that men dance all the parts—heavy bodies delicately balancing on toes as swans, sylphs, water sprites, romantic princesses, angst-ridden Victorian ladies—enhances rather than mocks the spirit of dance as an art form, delighting and amusing the most knowledgeable, as well as novices, in the audiences.

Chris Thile in Concert

February 25, 2023

MacArthur Fellow and Grammy Award-winning mandolinist, singer, songwriter Chris Thile, who the Guardian calls "that rare being: an all-round musician who can settle into any style, from bluegrass to classical,” and NPR calls a "genre-defying musical genius," is a founding member of the critically acclaimed bands Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek. For four years, Thile hosted public radio favorite Live from Here with Chris Thile (formerly known as A Prairie Home Companion). With his broad outlook, Thile creates a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike, giving the listener “one joyous arc, with the linear melody and vertical harmony blurring into a single web of gossamer beauty” (New York Times).

Most recently, Chris recorded Laysongs, out June 4, 2021 on Nonesuch. The album is his first truly solo album: just Thile, his voice, and his mandolin, on new recordings of six original songs and three covers, all of which contextualize and banter with his ideas about spirituality. Recorded in a converted upstate New York church during the pandemic, Laysongs’ centerpiece is the three-part “Salt (in the Wounds) of the Earth,” which was inspired by C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters. The album also features a song Thile wrote about Dionysus; a performance of the fourth movement of Béla Bartók’s Sonata for Solo Violin; “God Is Alive, Magic Is Afoot” based on Buffy Sainte-Marie’s adaptation of a Leonard Cohen poem; a cover of bluegrass legend Hazel Dickens’ “Won’t You Come and Sing for Me,” and “Ecclesiastes 2:24," original instrumental loosely modeled after the Prelude from J.S. Bach’s Partita for Solo Violin in E Major.

The Temptations & The Four Tops

March 9, 2023

THE TEMPTATIONS

For more than fifty years, The Temptations have prospered, propelling popular music with a series of smash hits, and sold-out performances throughout the world.

“The crowds are bigger, the sales are sizzling,” says one industry report. “The outpouring of affection for this super-group has never been greater.”

The history of The Temptations is the history of contemporary American pop. An essential component of the original Motown machine, that amazing engine invented by Berry Gordy, The Temps began their musical life in Detroit in the early sixties. It wasn’t until 1964 however, that the Smokey Robinson written-and-produced “The Way You Do the things You Do” turned the guys into stars.

An avalanche of hits followed, many of which...”My Girl,” for instance...attained immortality. “It’s Growing,” “Since I Lost My Baby;,” “Get Ready,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “Beauty Is only Skin Deep,” “I Wish It Would Rain”...the hits kept coming.

THE FOUR TOPS

The quartet, originally called the Four Aims, made their first single for Chess in 1956, and spent seven years on the road and in nightclubs, singing pop, blues, Broadway, but mostly jazz—four-part harmony jazz. When Motown’s Berry Gordy Jr. found out they had hustled a national “Tonight Show” appearance, he signed them without an audition to be the marquee act for the company’s Workshop Jazz label. That proved short-lived, and Stubbs’ powerhouse baritone lead and the exquisite harmonies of Fakir, Benson, and Payton started making one smash after another with the writing-producing trio Holland-Dozier-Holland.

Their first Motown hit, “Baby I Need Your Loving” in 1964, made them stars and their sixties track record on the label is indispensable to any retrospective of the decade. Their songs, soulful and bittersweet, were across-the-board successes. “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch),” a no. 1 R&B and Pop smash in 1965, is one of Motown’s longest-running chart toppers; it was quickly followed by a longtime favorite, “It’s The Same Old Song” (no. 2 R&B/no. 5 pop). Their commercial peak was highlighted by a romantic trilogy: the no. 1 “Reach Out I’ll Be There,” “Standing In The Shadows Of Love” (no. 2 R&B/no. 6 pop) and “Bernadette” (no. 3 R&B/no. 4 pop)—an extraordinary run of instant H-D-H classics. Other Tops hits from the decade included “Ask The Lonely,” “Shake Me, Wake Me (When It’s Over),” “Something About You,” “You Keep Running Away,” “7-Rooms Of Gloom” and their covers of “Walk Away Renee” and “If I Were A Carpenter.” The group was also extraordinarily popular in the U.K.

The Daughter of the Regiment

April 21 & 23, 202

Opera Orlando is in the army now, as it closes its Opera Everlasting season with Donizetti’s hilarious The Daughter of the Regiment. Enjoy this family-friendly tale about Marie, the eponymous “daughter” of the regiment. She was orphaned as an infant, but miraculously adopted and raised by a French army regiment not knowing of her noble birthright.

The military life suits Marie just fine until she falls for the handsome peasant Tonio. Love-struck for Marie, Tonio must join the regiment to be near her, and prove his worth to her army of “fathers.” To further complicate matters Marie is whisked away from the regiment by the Marquise of Birkenfeld who knows of her aristocratic lineage and wants to introduce her properly to society. Of course, this upends the regimental order of things, and Marie must then choose between marrying for love or rejecting love and her found family to maintain her social status.

It’s a show of equal parts comedy, romance, and vocal fireworks led by stage director Andrew Nienaber and featuring the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Johsua Horsch. Internationally-acclaimed Puerto Rican soprano Camille Ortiz makes her Opera Orlando debut in the title role of Marie, and she is joined by Orlando native and Metropolitan Opera National Competition winner Carlos Enrique Santelliwho takes on the role of Tonio and the famous aria “Ah mes amis…” with no less than 9 high C’s. Now, nearly a decade later, Postmodern Jukebox has grown to become a pop culture mainstay in its own right, having played over a thousand shows on six continents worldwide — including acclaimed venues like Radio City Music Hall, Sydney Opera House, and Red Rocks Amphitheater. In the process, PMJ has introduced audience to many of the world’s greatest singers, dancers, and instrumentalist — many of whom have gone on to become stars in their own right.

You Won't Believe What They Look Like Today! with very special guests Jeff Babko and The Steep Canyon Rangers

April 29, 2023

Steve Martin and Martin Short’s “You Won’t Believe What They Look Like Today!” is a show that redefines the form in unexpected and profound ways, from two of the funniest, most influential and acclaimed talents of the past century. Their humor is often subversive, but it is always a joyous self-deprecating romp from two comedy masters driven to make each other laugh as much as the audience.

The jokes come at you at a rapid-fire pace with little set-up and big punch lines as they mock Hollywood and the fickle nature of celebrity, but the comedy truly soars when they lovingly (and relentlessly) roast each other. Martin and Short’s chemistry and timing on stage reflects a friendship forged over three decades which developed when they met for the first time on the set of the 1986 film “Three Amigos.” These two titans of comedy have been touring together since 2015, when they launched their first live show entitled “A Very Stupid Conversation.”

Love was also in the air in Mendelssohn’s First Piano Concerto, dedicated to an object of his youthful affection. Inon Barnatan (“One of the most admired pianists of his generation” ~ New York Times) is the soloist for this sometimes brilliant, sometimes gossamer, but always romantic, work.
