- Multi-platinum crooner Stephen Sanchez announces huge tour winding up in Orlando this October
Fresh from releasing his second album, Angel Face (Club Deluxe), Stephen Sanchez has announced a major headlining tour that will see the crooner visit over 30 venues. Stephen Sanchez is hitting the road this summer, with the multi-platinum singer-songwriter kicking off the tour on August 1 in Columbus, OH and ending October 29 in Orlando, FL. Sanchez will be joined on stage at Dr Phillips Center in Orlando with special guests, The Paper Kites. The tour announcement comes hot on the heels of Angel Face (Club Deluxe), the highly anticipated deluxe edition of his critically acclaimed debut album, Angel Face. The deluxe album features five new tracks, including spellbinding hit “The Other Side,” plus the fan favorite duet version of his 4x-Platinum smash “Until I Found You” [with Em Beihold]. Tickets are available for the Orlando show on October 29, starting with an artist presale on Wednesday, May 1 at 10 am local time, with tickets on general sale beginning Friday, May 3 at 10 am, via the Dr Phillips Center website. Stephen Sanchez has materialized at the forefront of popular culture with a sound that’s as timeless as it is necessary for the times. It’s easy to sway into the embrace of his breezy baritone stylings, warm guitar phrasing, and untouchable charisma. His music is also an eternal bright spot illuminated by a belief that the kind of romance and love we used to see on the silver screen is still possible. Barely in his twenties, the singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer has already enchanted audiences everywhere. His breakout single “Until I Found You” went multi platinum, vaulted into the Top 25 of the Billboard Hot 100, and generated nearly 2 billion streams powered by the original, piano version, and duet with gold-certified pop singer and songwriter Em Beihold. He delivered much talked-about performances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Meanwhile, he also sold out successive headline tours and earned acclaim from Billboard, Consequence, and more. He was even invited by Sir Elton John to perform “Until I Found You” at Elton’s last show ever headlining Glastonbury. Now, he spins a story unlike anything you’ve ever heard (or seen) on his 2023 full-length debut, Angel Face [Mercury Records/Republic Records] introduced by the single “Be More,” out now. The record tells the tale of “The Troubadour Sanchez” a fictional musician who blew up in 1958 with “Until I Found You,” lit up popular culture, and was tragically gunned down in 1964 after falling in love with a mob boss’s girlfriend, Evangeline. However, his long lost debut has been unearthed 59 years later in the form of Angel Face. - Hooray for Hollywood - Disney's Hollywood Studios celebrates 35 years!
Walt Disney World is today, Wednesday, May 1, 2024 is celebrating the 35th Anniversary of Disney's Hollywood Studios, or as many of us know it, MGM Studios! On this day in 2008, Disney-MGM Studios opened at Walt Disney World. As many of you know, before being renamed to Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2008, Disney World's third park was called Disney-MGM Studios. And from the beginning, you’d enter on Hollywood Boulevard and find stylish shops inspired by the architecture of buildings in the Hollywood area of California. Today, as the theme park celebrates its 35th anniversary, Disney is marking the occasion by sharing 14 rare and unique vintage images from years past. Over the years, celebrating Hollywood glitz and glamor smack dab in the middle of Florida has created some unforgettable images. Here, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck and even Roger Rabbit leave their mark at the park. In fact, between opening and 1995, some of the most iconic and legendary celebrities placed hand, foot (and even nose) prints into the concrete squares in the Great Movie Ride courtyard. But before the park fun began, Disney’s Hollywood Studios started as a concept for an entertainment-themed EPCOT pavilion that expanded into its own 135-acre park – seen in the aerial photo above. On opening day, the only two operating attractions were the Studio Backlot Tour and the Great Movie Ride, now both sadly gone. From the beginning, the park was spectacular! In these breathtaking aerial views of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, you can see several familiar landmarks, including the Theater of Stars where guests would eventually see Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage. In early 1994, things began to look a little more like we know them today. And when Sunset Boulevard officially opened, it completely changed the skyline and atmosphere of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The iconic Twilight Zone Tower of Terror would eventually make the “5th dimension” the norm for visiting guests. Imagineers watched more than 150 episodes of “The Twilight Zone” to get it right before the attraction opened in July 1994. Back in 1989, the third edition of “The Mickey Mouse Club” made its debut on the Disney Channel and was shot on location at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. This mesmerizing image is from one of the show’s seven seasons. In another smile-inducing vintage image from the park, you can see the Hercules – Zero to Hero Victory Parade in 1997 as it rolled into Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The 14-minute cavalcade celebrated the Walt Disney Animation Studios animated movie by taking guests on an adventure where townsfolk rallied around Hercules after his triumph over Hydra. And for Star Wars fans – in 1990, before the popular Star Tours attraction opened at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, check out this unique image of an impressive 35-foot Imperial All-Terrain Armored Transport Walker (AT-AT). No look at Hollywood Studios would be complete without a look at Gertie. This giant dino is a tribute to Gertie the Trained Dinosaur – one of the first popular animated characters in film. The character was not developed by Walt Disney, but by newspaper cartoonist Winsor McCay in 1913. In 1989, Walt Disney Imagineers honored Gertie by constructing an oversized tribute to her at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. All of Missy’s six studio albums have each been RIAA platinum certified or better, marking her among the only female rappers ever to achieve that remarkable accomplishment. Among her countless triumphs, 2023 saw Elliott named as the first female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, rightly declaring her “a true path breaker in a male-dominated genre.” Elliott’s most recent work, 2019’s acclaimed EP, ICONOLOGY, drew instant applause upon its surprise release, with USA Today declaring it “a master class at the school of Missy Misdemeanor Elliott.” That same year saw the iconic star making history as the first female hip-hop artist ever to receive the MTV Video Music Awards’ prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. 2019 also saw her break new ground as the first female hip-hop artist and third-ever rapper to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In addition, Elliott became the first female rapper to receive an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music, celebrating her lasting contributions to music and popular culture. Further accolades followed in 2021, with Elliott named among the twelve inaugural inductees for the new Atlanta landmark, The Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame, and later honored with her own star on the world famous Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2022, Elliott’s hometown of Portsmouth, VA celebrated its favorite daughter by presenting her with the Key to the City and renaming a portion of McLean Street to “Missy Elliott Boulevard” and declaring October 17 as Missy Elliott Day. What’s more, Virginia’s Norfolk State University awarded Elliott with the Presidential Commencement Medallion and an honorary degree at their fall 2022 commencement ceremony, acknowledging her “outstanding professional achievements and extraordinary contributions to public service.” In addition to her historic induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2023, the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective presented Elliott with its Recording Academy Global Impact Award, honoring her personal and professional achievements in the music industry. The 2023 GRAMMY Awards saw Elliott among the superstars celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, joining such icons as LL Cool J, Ice-T, Method Man, Busta Rhymes, and Salt-N-Pepa for a landmark performance honoring the genre’s diverse history. Additional 2023 tributes include the Black Music Honors’ “Music Innovator Icon” award as well as a special ESSENCE cover story celebrating her headline performance at the 2023 ESSENCE Festival of Culture in New Orleans. Indeed, Missy Elliott deserves all the flowers and then some. Now, with her OUT OF THIS WORLD — The Missy Elliott Experience hitting arenas across North America with Ciara, Busta Rhymes and special guest Timbaland – and new music always on the horizon – Missy Elliott continues to stand tall over pop culture as a true creative architect and revolutionary artist, her prophetic sound and vision as groundbreaking and influential as ever before. On May 3, the second concert of the festival, “The Road West” will take the audience to Europe as they encounter the tradition, innovation, and beauty of Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem. 2024 marks 100 years since Fauré’s death. He was one of the most revered composers of the late 19th century and his beautiful Requiem, unlike traditional requiem settings, embraces a serene and contemplative approach, focusing on the themes of rest, peace, and eternal light. The concert will feature soprano soloist Samantha Barnes Daniel, and baritone Matthew Astone, both members of Orlando Sings’ professional award-winning ensemble Solaria. The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra will once again join Orlando Sings for this year’s festival. Concert master Rimma Bergeron-Langlois will play the violin solo in the third movement. Paired on the concert with Faure’s Requiem will be composer Reena Esmail’s Malhaar: A Requiem for Water, which demonstrates the composer’s unique and groundbreaking blend of Indian and Western classical styles. In Hindustani music, “Malhaar” refers to a family of raags that beckon rain. The work intertwines texts from the traditional Latin Requiem mass alongside the work of Wendell Berry and William O’Daly, along with interspersed Hindi text. It traces a trajectory of beauty and awe of water, the fear and devastation around its loss, an answered plea of atonement, and eventually a promise of a new cycle of life. This piece will feature renowned Hindustani soprano Saili Oak and tabla recording artist Shankh Lahiri. For more information and to book tickets, click here.
