Sorry Orlando, there will be no Publix Hurricane Cakes this year!

Bad news, as there will be no more Publix Hurricane Cakes to see us through a hurricane as we hunker down.

Sorry Orlando, there will be no Publix Hurricane Cakes this year

A long-time tradition for many of us Central Floridian's as a hurricane approaches, is heading to Publix for hurricane supplies before hunkering down to see out the storm...

Water, chips, batteries, bread, toilet roll, fruit, pasta, oh and a hurricane cake, or a giant "go away hurricane" chocolate chip cookie, or both!!

We'll not this year, as Publix have announced that they will not make, bake or sell hurricane cakes ever again.

This follows criticism of the Lakeland-based grocery chain after the company was vilified on social media as photos of hurricane-themed cakes from Publix bakeries went viral last year as the monster storm, Hurricane Ian approached Florida.

Ian struck Southwest Florida on Sept. 28, 2022, as a major hurricane, causing devastation across many coastal areas of south west Florida.

Hurricane Ian tied for the fifth-strongest hurricane ever to make landfall in the U.S., and the name Ian was retired from the list of storm names, due to the huge trail of destruction and loss of life caused.

Publix

In September 2022, as Hurricane Ian approached, Publix issued a statement about hurricane-themed cakes in response to the criticism of the grocery chains Hurricane Cakes:

"We appreciate your reaching out regarding decorated cakes from our bakery departments. Our associates make every effort to support our customers during weather events. Often times, this includes finding ways to delight them with their favorite Publix items as they prepare for uncertainty. For these requests in particular, it is our company policy to not produce bakery cakes that would make light of a natural disaster. We have sent communications to our stores reminding them of our policy. We regret if a store has not followed policy, and we are working to rectify the situation. Our priority remains taking care of our customers, associates and communities as we prepare and respond to Hurricane Ian.”

Now, according to News 6, the decision still stands, and the decision was made to avoid potentially downplaying natural disasters.

So no more hurricane cakes, sorry folks!
