In response to recent events and ongoing conversations around youth engagement, the program is returning with renewed energy, strong tenant support, and exciting offerings for local teens.

Oviedo Mall is relaunching its Mall Rat Teen Club Program, beginning in May 2025. Originally launched in early 2023 to enthusiastic community response, the program was placed on pause as mall management shifted focus to capital improvements.

Now, in light of recent incidents of disruptive behavior and vandalism, the program is returning with renewed energy and purpose—providing teens a safe, positive, and engaging space while strengthening Oviedo’s sense of community.

“As someone who spent most of his youth hanging out at the mall, I know how meaningful it is to have a safe place to go with friends,” said Josh Gunderson, Director of Marketing & Events at Oviedo Mall. “The last thing we want to do is implement a curfew or chaperone policy. We’ve tried to be very clear about how hard we’re working to avoid that, which is why we’ve made such heartfelt appeals to our community. The term ‘mall rat’ exists for a reason—because for decades, malls were the place to be for teens. We still want that for today’s youth: a safe, welcoming space where they can hang out with friends, have fun, and build those same lasting memories.”

The Mall Rat Teen Club gives teens access to exclusive discounts, events, and experiences

throughout the mall. Enrollment requires a parent or guardian to be present for membership card pickup, during which both teen and parent sign Oviedo Mall’s Code of Conduct—reinforcing mutual respect and accountability.

Oviedo Mall recognizes that the mall experience has evolved. While it may not look like the malls of the 80s and 90s, Oviedo Mall has adapted to become a true community center—a place where people can live, work, shop, dine, and gather. With this relaunch, the mall is affirming its commitment to being a place for everyone—including the next generation.

Upcoming Teen Club offerings include:

• Free photography lessons

• Yoga and wellness classes

• Cooking classes

• A young adult book club

• Mall scavenger hunts and pop-up events

• And more coming this summer!

“Between our recent social media posts and news coverage, we know a lot of eyes are on us right now,” Gunderson added. “This is our chance to show the world what makes Oviedo Mall special—and that includes recognizing and celebrating the teens who show up, follow the rules, and help create a positive environment. We want to empower them, support them, and give them a place they can be proud to call their own.”

Parents can visit www.myoviedomall.com to learn more about the program and register their teens today. Membership cards will be available for pick up in the mall management office beginning Thursday May 1 and cards can be picked up Monday-Friday 9 am-5 pm and during select mall events.

For younger kids under 12, Oviedo Mall also offers the Kid Crew Program, which includes seasonal activities, character appearances, and family-friendly events year-round.
