Orange County Mayor Demings responds to NAACP Travel Advisory - Hate is never welcome here!

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People have issued a travel advisory for those travelling to Florida, citing state laws that they say are restricting diversity, equity, and inclusion, Orange County Mayor Demings wants the NAACP to know that Orange County is a welcoming community and not a danger to minority travelers.

Orange County Florida

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings has responded to a travel advisory issued by the civil rights organization NAACP on Saturday that stated that “Florida is openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals. Before traveling to Florida, please understand that the state of Florida devalues and marginalizes the contributions of, and the challenges faced by African Americans and other communities of color."

The formal notice from NAACP is the organizations response to what they call Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' aggressive attempts to erase Black history and to restrict any diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in Florida schools.

In response to the travel advisory Mayor Jerry Demings has been quick to say that Orange County is a community that values diversity and embraces inclusion, and that hate is never welcome in Orange County.

Here is the full statement form Demings:

“Orange County is open for business. Our residents represent a broad diaspora of cultures, which makes us stronger as a society. Please be assured our community values diversity and embraces inclusion. Hate is never welcome here. We look forward to working with the NAACP to reassure them and others that Orange County is a caring, compassionate and welcoming community."
