Join Orlando Museum Of Art for Free Family Fun Day on Oct. 4, featuring Children’s Illustrator Sophie Blackall
Sophie Blackall is an award-winning illustrator of over 50 books for children, including the New York Times best-selling Ivy and Bean series.
Orlando Museum of Art will be hosting a free Family Day on Saturday, October 3, from 11 am to 2 pm in honor of the Hello Sophie! The Artwork of Sophie Blackall exhibition.
This event is a fun and educational experience for all ages, featuring hands-on activities, live music, storytelling, dance and more, all centered around Sophie’s award-winning work.
Sophie Blackall has illustrated more than 50 children's books, including the New York Times best-selling Ivy and Bean series. She is a two-time winner of the Randolph Caldecott Medal – a yearly award given to the illustrator of the best American picture book for children – for Finding Winnie in 2016 and Hello Lighthouse in 2019. The free Family Day on Saturday, October 3, includes a presentation and a book signing with Sophie.
Families will also experience Hello Lighthouse through Symphony Storytime@OMA, featuring a narrated reading brought to life with live music performed by musicians from the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra. It’s a chance to encounter the story through sound as well as pictures, then spend time exploring the art that inspired your visit. Reading the book beforehand can give children something familiar to listen for and a starting point for their own questions about making books.
Highlights of the FREE FAMILY Day include:
Symphony Storytime@OMA Hello Lighthouse
Presentation by Sophie Blackall followed by a book signing
Music with Mr. Richard
Baby and Me with Orlando Family Stage
Story Strolls with Orlando Family Stage

Hello Sophie!: The Artwork of Sophie Blackall brings original picture book art by two-time Caldecott Medalist Sophie Blackall to the Orlando Museum of Art (OMA) through January 3, 2027. Families visiting our galleries in Orlando’s Loch Haven Park can explore the work of the children’s book illustrator behind Ivy and Bean, Finding Winnie, and Hello Lighthouse.
Organized by the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature (NCCIL) in Abilene, Texas, the exhibition invites you to award-winning artwork of Sophie Blackall. Think of the page your child always wants to revisit before the story moves on, and now a gallery visit makes room for that same curiosity, with time to notice a detail, imagine a conversation, or wonder how an artist made a character feel so real.
The exhibition is on display at OMA through January 3, 2027.
