The pool symbolizes luxury and leisure in America, and it has been captivating artists since the 1950s with bright sunlight, vibrant colors, and modernist architecture. The exhibition features artists who emerged in the mid-20th century, yet their themes of pool culture, class, and leisure remain strikingly contemporary. This is further emphasized by the younger generation of artists reclaiming the narrative of the pool in relationship to family, like Amy Bennett and Isca Greenfield-Sanders, and within more social, environmental, and civic contexts, such as Derrick Adams, Anastasia Samoylova, Jay Lynn Gomez. These themes, so relevant to our lives today, will engage and connect with visitors at Mennello Museum of American Art.

Shimmering with passion and poetry, this Pulitzer-prize masterpiece was hailed by The New York Times as “a hymn to the transforming and potentially dangerous powers of art.” In Ybor City, (Tampa) Florida, 1929, cigars are rolled by hand as Cuban factory workers listen to the voices of lectors reading aloud great works of literature. When a handsome new lector begins reading Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, he ignites a powder keg of passions. Old traditions and new ways collide while longing, love, and betrayal spark a volatile flame that signals the end of an era.
