Fun Facts About Leap Day
It takes the Earth 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 45 seconds to orbit the sun. This creates approximately an “extra” 6 hours each year, or 24 hours every four years.
Leap Day is added to the calendar every four years to account for this extra 24 hours.
If we didn’t add a Leap Day on February 29 every four years, each calendar year would begin about 6 hours before the earth completes its revolution around the sun.
Doesn’t seem like such a big deal does it? Well, it is. With a deviation of 6 hours per year, the seasons would shift by 24 calendar days within 100 years. Within a few centuries, people in the Northern Hemisphere would be celebrating Christmas in the middle of summer.
A person born on Leap Day is known as a “leapling” or a “leaper”. They usually celebrate their birthday on February 28 or March 1 in a non-leap year.
The odds of being born on Leap Day is 1 in 1,461.
There are just over 187,000 Leapings in the United States, with more than 4 million people around the world.
The town of Anthony, TX is the self-professed “Leap Year Capital of the World” and the it celebrates the distinction with a festival and a parade.
The Summer Olympic Games are held every four years on leap years.
Some cultures that use a lunar calendar – a calendar that is based on the moon’s movement, add a whole leap month every three years.
According to tradition, it's OK for a woman to propose to a man on Feb. 29.
