Valencia College Theater launches its first play of the fall season with the Florida premiere of “Yaga,” a modern twist on an old Slavic folk tale, which opens on Oct. 3 for seven performances.
The story begins when a detective arrives in a small, isolated town with one question: What does the disappearance of a young heir to a yogurt empire have to do with a strange bit of local lore about an old witch?
Partnered with a reluctant local sheriff, a university professor with a weakness for younger men, and an eccentric cast of townsfolk, the detective soon finds himself unraveling more than just a missing person’s case. As the investigation unfolds, the Slavic myth of Baba Yaga twists into a dark, tangled web of secret lives, ancient magic, and more suspects than answers.
Reviewers have applauded playwright Kat Sandler’s take on this ancient legend. “Sandler has triumphantly reclaimed the evil-woman myth. Move over, ‘Wicked’ and ‘Maleficent,’ and welcome Yaga to the sisterhood,” said critic Martin Morrow of The (Toronto) Globe and Mail.
