Uncertainty remains over the future home for The Winter Park Playhouse

Located blocks away from downtown Winter Park and minutes from downtown Orlando, The Winter Park Playhouse is known for its outstanding entertainment and welcoming atmosphere but as the buildings owners want to sell, where will the Playhouse call home?

The Winter Park Playhouse

The intimacy of the 123-seat theatre on N Orange Ave engages patrons in a unique up-close-and-personal theatrical experience.

The Winter Park Playhouse is home to Central Florida's only professional musical theater, founded in 2002, The Winter Park Playhouse is a 501(c)(3) producing and developing year-round professional musical theater programming, in-house and out in the community, that entertains, uplifts, and inspires.

The theater moved into the current space on August 15, 2009, but now the landlord, Winter Park Mercantile Investment Properties has put the property on the market for $4.25 million, which means that The Winter Park Playhouse may have to move after the building is sold.

Back in March The Winter Park Playhouse posted on their Twitter account. "Help The Playhouse find a new home in Winter Park! We are NOT closing, just need a new location in the future. Show support by emailing the City of WP to help us obtain a city/ non-profit partnership soon! Email -mayorandcommissioners@cityofwinterpark.org Thanks for the love!"

At the time the city of Winter Park suggested building above the parking lot at the new Seven Oaks Park at the corner of Orange Ave. and Denning Dr., but some city commissioners have been concerned about the idea, largely because of the need for more parking in the future, as well as concerns about how the building would change the look and feel of the new park.

As the theatre continue to look for a possible new home, the city of Winter Park have also raised the idea of redeveloping the old Winter Park Library site, either by remodelling the building or demolishing it for a new build.

Now the latest idea from the city is whether to buy the current Winter Park Playhouse building that is for sale and keep the theater in the space.

Winter Park City Commissioners have raised the idea of using Community Redevelopment Agency funds combined with Orange County Tourism Development Tax dollars to buy the building.

While commissioners mull over the various option they have voted to move forward with redevelopment concepts for the old library and voting to give preference to proposals that keep the 1978 building rather than demolish it

They also voted to put on hold a Request for Proposal for the air rights above the Seven Oaks parking lot.

As for The Winter Park Playhouse, the executive director Heather Alexander, said the theaer is open to the city purchasing the current building, but also remains interested in building at the park or the old Winter Park Library site.

So we have three acts, guess we will have to wait and see how it plays out!
