As we continue to keep a watchful eye on Tropical Storm Idalia, the latest update from the National Hurricane Center at 5 pm Sunday, Idalia is forecast to become a category 1 hurricane over the eastern Gulf of Mexico, and there is now an increasing risk of life-threatening storm surge and hurricane-force winds along portions of the west coast of Florida and the Florida Panhandle beginning as early as Tuesday.

Although it is too soon to specify the exact location and magnitude of these impacts, storm surge and hurricane watches have been issued for portions of the west coast of Florida and the coast of the Florida Panhandle, and residents in these areas should monitor updates to the forecast and follow any advice given by local officials.

The NHC are forecasting that scattered flash and urban flooding can be expected across portions of the west coast of Florida, the Florida Panhandle and portions of the Southeast U.S. by Tuesday into Thursday.

As Tropical Storm Idalia now continues on a track towards Florida, storm surge and hurricane watches have been issued for portions of Florida’s Gulf Coast.

A storm surge watch has been issued for Chokoloskee to Indian Pass, Florida, including Tampa Bay.

A storm surge watch means that there is a possibility of life-threatening inundation, from rising water moving inland from the coastline, during the next 48 hours.

A hurricane watch is in effect for Englewood to Indian Pass, including Tampa Bay, meaning hurricane conditions are possible.

So far, here in Central Florida, Sumter County is under a hurricane watch, with Lake and Polk County now under a tropical storm watch.

Although still too early to specify the exact location and magnitude of these impacts, as per the current track of the storm, impacts for Central Florida include gusty squalls, heavy rain and a risk of tornadoes Tuesday and Wednesday. However, any shift in the track eastwards could mean a much greater impact in Central Florida.

Rresidents should monitor updates to the forecast of this system and ensure that they have their hurricane plan in place.
