It's only one day into the 2023 Hurricane Season and Tropical Storm Arlen has formed in the Gulf of Mexico!
According to the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Arlene has formed in the Gulf of Mexico Friday, June 2 roughly 200 miles west of Florida.
Arlens is now officially the first named storm of the season.
Earlier today, U.S. Air Force Hurricane Hunters investigating the system discovered the former tropical depression had winds of at least 40 mph, officially meeting the criteria to be designated as a tropical storm.
The NHC commented in an advisory today, "Although the storm has strengthened slightly, we still expect Arlene to weaken soon due to increasing wind shear and dry air, and no change has been made to the forecast,"
According to the NHC, Tropical Storm Arlene's track is expected to keep the storm offshore, with Florida not expecting any direct impacts, with only an increased chance of showers and thunderstorms, which is not unusual for this time of year anyway!
