Pierre Bensusan brings his legendary “Old Lady” Guitar to Orlando for an intimate evening of music

 Bensusan performs in Timucua season as part of 50 year anniversary world tour.

The music begins long before the first note. For Pierre Bensusan, it begins with a guitar that has traveled with him for nearly five decades. In 1978, master luthier George Lowden built Bensusan an S22. Somewhere along the years that followed, the guitar acquired a name: the “Old Lady.” Since then, she has been a constant companion through recordings, stages, airports, long roads, and unfamiliar rooms. Decades passed, and the instrument became less a possession than a relationship—the kind that grows difficult to explain because so much happens without words.

On Monday, September 21, Bensusan will bring that relationship to Orlando for an intimate performance at the white house, where audiences will have the opportunity to experience the acclaimed guitarist and his longtime instrument at close range.Bensusan approaches the guitar with the familiarity of someone listening to an old friend. There is no theatrical struggle between player and instrument. He listens first. Then the hands begin.

The “Old Lady” makes that sense of wonder tangible. After so many years, familiarity has not exhausted the instrument. The opposite seems to have happened. The longer Bensusan plays, the more the guitar reveals: a familiar piece turns unexpectedly, a note takes on a different weight, a rhythm seems to have been waiting for the room in which it is played. “Who knows where an idea comes from?” Bensusan says. “The imagination has to stay open.” That openness has been shaped by a life on the road.

“There’s inspiration everywhere when I travel,” he says. “On the train, at the airport, walking in the street. Sometimes I take the guitar out and play. You take everything in, but you have to stay true to your own voice, to the sound of your guitar.”“It’s personal,” Bensusan says.

“You can be inspired by other people. You listen to what they do, what they don’t do, and you try to find the spirit behind it. Then you make it your own.” That philosophy has continued into Bensusan’s later work. His “New Lady,” a signature model created in collaboration with Lowden, extends his relationship with the instrument into another generation. Yet the original “Old Lady” remains essential, carrying the intimacy of recordings, performances, and countless hours spent discovering what a guitar can do.

The September 21 performance offers the chance to hear that history in an intimate setting.
