Sever Storms bring Tornado Warnings, Wind, Rain and Lightning to Central Florida

Central Florida has experienced severe storms with winds, heavy rain, and lightning. A Tornado Watch has been in effect for much of Central Florida.

A powerful line of storms is moving across Central Florida, and we will be bringing you LIVE UPDATES as the storm moves across the area.

The biggest threat will be damaging winds as gusts could reach up to 70 mph, together with the threat of tornadoes, with the possibility of strong tornados touching down in the area. Heavy rain, lightning and some small hail is also possible.

Orlando International Airport Update

Gate Link and Terminal Link services are now restored. A Ground Stop is still in effect until 7:30 pm. Continue to check directly with your airline to verify your flight status.

A ground stop is in effect at MCO. Plus, due to high winds in the area, all Gate Links and Terminal Links at Orlando International Airport are being held at their stations. Updates will follow. Please continue to check directly with your airline for any changes in regards to your flight.

Tornado Warning for Orange County until 6:15 pm

The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a Tornado Warning for Orange County including Orlando until 6.15 pm.

A severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Sea World, or near Oak Ridge, moving east at 40 mph.

This dangerous storm will be near Orlando International Airport, and Conway around 5.50 pm, and Azalea Park, Lake Hart, and Lake Nona around 6 pm.

Severe Thunderstorm Warnings now issued for parts of Lake, Orange and Volusia counties until 5:30 p.m.

US National Weather Service Melbourne has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning including Apopka FL, Ocoee FL and Winter Garden FL until 5:30 pm

FAA Warn Of Airport Disruption

The Federal Aviation Administration is warning of weather impacts to flights along the East Coast today, especially later on at Atlanta, Orlando, and Tampa International Airports.

Make sure you check your flight status with your airline.

Aquatica Orlando Closing Early

Aquatica Orlando will close early today at 3 pm due to the incoming storm. The water park is also scheduled to be closed tomorrow, Jan. 10.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay Closing At 2 pm

Busch Gardens has anounced via its social media channels that the park will close early today at 2 pm.

Orange County Government Closing At 3 pm

Orange County Government Offices to close today at 3 pm due to the weather forecast and potential for strong winds and rain expected this afternoon beginning at 4 pm.


County Offices will re-open for business on Wednesday, January 10, 2024.


The County’s Office of Emergency Management is monitoring the weather conditions as the system moves through Florida. Residents are encouraged to sign up for the County’s public safety messages through the OCAlert Emergency Alert System.

Orange County Sheriff's Office Closing

Due to the impending severe weather, all Orange County Sheriff's Office locations open to the public will be CLOSING today at 3 pm, deputies will continue to keep residents & visitors safe. If you need help, call 911 or the non-emergency line at 407-836-4357. Normal operations will resume tomorrow.

Orlando International Airport Warns Of Disruption

Due to weather conditions today, airline operations may be impacted - flight/baggage delivery delays may occur. Please check with your airline directly for any updates in regards to their operations. For airport status, visit:

Swan Boats at Lake Eola Closed Today

The Swan Boats at Lake Eola are closed today, January 9, due to inclement weather in the forecast. They will reopen on Wednesday, January 10.

School Closure Information


Schools will follow Wednesday early dismissal schedule on Tuesday to ensure students get home before “the worst of the storm begins”

The district will excuse absences for students who stay home due to the weather on Tuesday

Outdoor after-school activities, including sports games and night-school classes, are canceled on Tuesday

Extended Learning Centers will remain open


All after-school activities have been canceled for Tuesday

Extended Day programs for middle and elementary schools will operate but will have no outdoor activity


After-school athletic events and extracurricular activities at all district schools have been canceled on Tuesday

Extended Day and the 21st Century program will run as normal on Tuesday afternoon


After-school activities and sports will be canceled on Tuesday

Schools scheduled to remain open during normal hours


All after-school activities, athletics and extracurriculars are canceled for Tuesday

Kid Zone and 21st Century programs will operate as scheduled, but will have no outdoor activities
