Lightning ignites Sanford’s fireworks ahead of schedule with tonight's fireworks cancelled at Star Spangled Sanford

Tonight, Friday July 4, there will be no fireworks at Star Spangled Sanford, although teh event is still going ahead.
Due to a thunder storm earlier this afternoon, a lightning strike in the area unexpectedly triggered the launch of the City of Sanford’s fireworks display ahead of schedule.
The fireworks display scheduled for tonight will now not take place at Fort Mellon Park in Sanford.
City officials report that no injuries have occurred as a result of this incident.
The Star Spangled Sanford event will continue until 9 pm as planned, featuring live music, food vendors, family fun, and festive activities at Fort Mellon Park.
The City of Sanford commented, "The safety of our residents and visitors remains our top priority. We ask that attendees do not bring any personal fireworks to the event. Unauthorized fireworks pose serious safety risks to both the public and emergency personnel."
Sanford Police Department added that the lightning strike hit in the city’s marina area, where the fireworks for tonight's display were being stored.
The lightning struck, and a chain of events occurred in which the fireworks ignited, and all of them went off, not only destroying the fireworks, but also the control panel used to sequence the fireworks display, together with other equipment.
