Dr. Phillips Center Summer Camps

This summer students can spend some time discovering new passions or sharpening skills over summer break.The Dr. Phillips Center theater camps are the perfect place for students to grow as artists, and at the same time make some pretty great memories, too.


Dr Phillips Center for the Performing Arts has unveiled an exciting variety of week-long summer camps available in June and July for students of varying ages and skill levels in a range of performing arts featuring musical theater and comedy.


Summer camps are on sale now! From comedy to Broadway, youth theater productions and more, self-expression is in session at the School of the Arts!


Dr. Phillips Center Summer Camps

Musical Theater: Take It From The Top

June 10 – 14, Age 10 – 18

Returning to Dr. Phillips Center is the popular Take It from The Top Program. This Broadway-focused, week-long workshop is a unique opportunity to learn from a talented team of experienced Broadway veterans and a professional casting director. This immersive learning experience is designed by Broadway pros Paul Canaan (Kinky Boots, Legally Blonde, Thoroughly Modern Millie, La Cage Aux Folles, Miss Saigon) and Tony Award Nominee Laura Bell Bundy (Legally Blonde, Wicked, Hairspray, Ruthless).


Participants will explore the “triple threat” talents of music, acting and dance with a final performance for an invited audience of family and friends in Steinmetz Hall. Explore the process of casting, auditions and rehearsals with mentorship from Broadway performers, directors, choreographers and a casting industry professional.


Comedy: Improv Intensive with SAK Comedy Lab

July 8 – 12, Ages 10 – 18

The annual Improv Intensive will provide an opportunity to delve into comedy, stand-up, monologue and improv while working through various acting and improvisational methods with expert Improvisors. Learn how to share your creativity with a scene partner and how to incorporate the energy of the audience. This week long intensive will help you grow in skill, craft and artistry as an actor. Plus, your friends and family will be able to see you perform in a final showcase on a professional stage.


Musical Theater: Best of Broadway
July 8 – 12, Ages 6 – 10

Calling all singers, dancers and actors! Join us as we learn to bring the best songs from Broadway classics to life, as well as new works! Our Broadway-focused Musical Theater week will help you develop a triple-threat skillset by expanding your vocal technique, character development, dance and stage presence. Plus, at the end of the week, your friends and family will be able to see you perform in the final showcase on a professional stage.


Musical Theater: The Magic of Disney
July 15 – 19, Ages 6 – 10

Be our guest and have the adventure of a lifetime as we bring the magic of musical theater to life during our Disney-themed Musical Theater week. Through theatrical performance combining songs, spoken dialogue, acting and dance, we’ll tell a thrilling story while moving through our favorite Disney movies! Plus, at the end of the week, your friends and family will be able to see you perform in the final showcase on a professional stage.


Musical Theater: Universal's Trolls World Tour and More
July 22 – 26, Ages 6 – 10

Get ready to rock as we travel the globe in this whirlwind musical theater week! This class will explore the valuable lessons of individuality, friendship, kindness and confidence through such popular Universal DreamWorks films as Trolls, Madagascar, Despicable Me and Shrek. We’ll focus on performance fundamentals like script reading, singing and dancing in a fun, supportive and collaborative environment. Plus, at the end of the week, your friends and family will be able to see you perform in the final showcase on a professional stage.


Summer Youth Theater Production: Mean Girls High School Version
June 17 – 29, Ages 13–19

Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the wild and vicious ways of her strange new home: Suburban Illinois. How will this naïve newbie rise to the top of the popularity pecking order? By taking on The Plastics, a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. But when Cady and her friends devise a "Revenge Party" to end Regina’s reign, she learns the hard way that you can’t cross a Queen Bee without getting stung.


Adapted from Tina Fey's hit 2004 film, Mean Girls was nominated for a staggering 12 Tony Awards. Join our own production this summer as we put in 80 hours of rehearsal leading to a performance in Steinmetz Hall. Each rehearsal will consist of blocking, character development, vocal rehearsals and choreography, as well as tech rehearsals combining lighting and sound elements to create a full professional production.


Two performances will be open to the public at the conclusion of the program. Tickets can be purchased for the public to attend at $25.00 each.
