Award-Winning Documentary “Know Your Place” to screen at Orange County Regional History Center for Juneteenth

Know Your Place offers firsthand accounts of segregation-era in Central Florida.

The Orange County Regional History Center will screen the award-winning documentary “Know Your Place” on a continuous loop throughout Juneteenth, Friday, June 19, following Heart of Florida United Way’s donation of the film to the History Center and the Historical Society of Central Florida.

Admission to the History Center will be free that day, courtesy of Orange County Government.

“Know Your Place” shares firsthand stories from prominent Black Central Floridians who lived in the segregated South before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, including Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings, former U.S. Rep. Val Demings, Judge Belvin Perry Jr. and the late state Sen. Geraldine Thompson.

The film recalls a Central Florida marked by “colored-only” water fountains, restrooms and businesses, while capturing the humor, resilience and humanity of the people who lived through it.

“I’m grateful to Heart of Florida United Way for including Macbeth Studio in this important documentary film project. It was an honor to help capture the stories of these exceptional individuals and record their lived experiences, which subsequent generations of Central Floridians will benefit from.

These recordings become more valuable as time goes on, especially when voices such as Senator Geraldine Thompson’s are silenced by their passing. "The ability to still see and hear them tell their stories, in their own words, is a gift to the future,” said Jim Hobart, director of “Know Your Place” and founder of Legacy Life Project, a Macbeth Studio initiative..

The documentary will also screen from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, Wednesday, June 17, as part of the

Orange County MLK Initiative’s Juneteenth celebration.

“Know Your Place” earned three Telly Awards from a field of more than 13,000 entries worldwide, including two Silver Tellys for history and social impact and a Bronze Telly for documentary, along with a Golden Brick Award for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion from the Downtown Orlando Partnership.

“This film is a gift to our community, serving as a powerful educational tool that sparks meaningful conversations and helps us understand our shared history, ” said Jeff Hayward, president and CEO of Heart of Florida United Way. “We are thrilled that the History Center will preserve this important piece of our community’s story.”
