The City of Orlando is once again allowing Mobile Food Vendors in Downtown, let's eat!

Earlier this week, the City of Orlando launched a new pilot program which is once again giving mobile food vendors the opportunity to legally trade in downtown Orlando.

During this weeks regular meeting of the Orlando City Council, commissioners unanimously approved a new Downtown Entertainment Area Mobile Food Cart Pilot Program that creates multiple provisions regulating food carts in downtown Orlando.

The new program allows mobile food carts to legally operate within the rights of way that comprise the downtown entertainment area (DEA).

Beginning this week, 12 pre-approved food carts can operate downtown from the hours of 6 pm through until 2:30 a.m. seven days a week.

The city council approved 10 designated locations downtown for registered and pre-approved carts to operate from nightly.

Participating vendors are subject to inspections and must possess several state and local permits, including a state license from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, and they have to maintain a minimum coverage of $1,000,000 of liability insurance.

Commissioners have included a clause in the pilot program that bans the use of styrofoam and single-use plastic bags, plus each each mobile food vendor will be responsible for providing trash receptacles for their operation.

The pilot program allows food trucks, lunch carts and food carts, and will be in effect for a period of one year, which will allow city staff the tie required to assess operations in anticipation of a permanent code amendment for the related sections in the city’s code of ordinances.
