Dr Phillips Center For The Performing Arts is driving forward with big plans to further expand the 9 acre campus, revealing designs that include transforming the front lawn of the campus into a stunning events space.
Dr Phillips Center For The Performing Arts has revealed grand plans to further enhance the already impressive, world class performance arts center.
Plans and artist impressions were released today as Dr Phillips Center presented its case to Orange County leaders in the hope of gaining funding from the tourist development tax to help bring the plans to fruition.
The Tourist Development Tax is the money that is raised by the county via a tourism tax that is levied against money visitors pay to stay in Orlando accommodation.
Last year, the county collected more than $330 million in tourism taxes. How this money is spend is decided by The Tourist Development Tax Task Force, who have 52 eligible projects all bidding for a share of the money available.
Groups looking for funding include UCF Sports, Amway Center, Orange County Convention Center, Leu Gardens, Orange County Regional History Center and many more.
The Task Force will give a recommendation on what projects to support to the county commissioners, who will make the final decision.
Dr Phillips Center is seeking $145 million from the Tourist Development Tax funds and an additional $15 million from the City of Orlando towards the total cost of the project that is estimated at $175 million.
The plans outlined would transform the Campus with a new 750 seat theater, 12,000-14,000 SF of exhibit space and 10,000 SF of event and banquet space.
The front lawn of the campus would be transformed with a new outdoor auditorium space that could accommodate upwards of 7,000 guests, a rooftop garden, a cafe, and a restaurant.
The ambitious plans also call for two new residential properties on the back of the campus, facing onto Rosalind Avenue.
If Dr Phillips Center were to receive funding, they hope to have the new expansion open by 2027.
Only time will tell if these truly stunning plans happen soon.
