  • The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard Program is available at Orlando International Airport

Today is World Autism Awareness Day, a day to celebrate the differences by being inclusive and supportive of those around you. On World Autism Awareness Day, Orlando International Airport are wanting to remind everyone that to help ease the travels of those with autism and their families, the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard Program is available at MCO. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard Program was first introduced by Orlando International Airport in November 2020 as a way to assist travelers to self-identify in a discreet manner to others, that they may require additional support while passing through the airport. Mayor Buddy Dyer commented on the scheme "Love this program that Orlando International Airport has joined. Our community will continue to strive to provide the kindness and support like this that helps residents and visitors with autism (and their families) thrive." History The Sunflower Lanyard Scheme® was originally created to act as discreet identification that the wearer, or their companion, has a hidden disability and might require additional assistance. London’s Gatwick was the first airport to introduce the scheme in May 2016, and multiple other airports across the UK have adopted the sunflower lanyard. Based on the success of the lanyards in airports additional organizations in the UK have adopted them including supermarkets, railway stations, museums, and sport venues. Although some other airports across the US are beginning to recognize the Sunflower Lanyard, we cannot guarantee that this lanyard will be recognized in other airports in the US. How does the MCO Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard Program work? Wearing a sunflower lanyard enables passengers to self-identify to staff that they have a hidden disability. It is a voluntary program and passengers are not required to participate. Passengers may choose to disclose their disability on the card, but they do not have to. They may also have a contact name and phone number on the card, which would be helpful if they are lost or are separated from their party. Airport staff are trained to recognize the lanyards and to be understanding if additional help is needed. Lanyards are available at the Main Terminal Information Booths, located on Level 3 (Departures Level, prior to the security checkpoint). Wearing a lanyard DOES NOT guarantee fast tracking through security or any preferential treatment. Passengers are still required to arrange special assistance with their airlines and TSA Cares. Thank you to our friends at Orlando International Airport for the details on this wonderful initiative. Bigfire Top pick: Lakeside Punch On a warm day, there are few drinks more refreshing and delicious than this. A combination of vodka and orange, pineapple, and cranberry juices make this a crisp, citrusy choice to sip with just about any item on the menu. Honorable mention: PB&J If you’re looking for a unique and fun twist on your typical Old Fashioned, this drink is for you. The combination of peanut butter whiskey, bourbon, and raspberry liqueur gives you a drink that is a little sweeter than what you might expect, but in a really satisfying way. Sitting down at the bar and looking out over the fire pits outside is really the ideal way to enjoy this sandwich-turned-drink. Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar Top pick: Ruby Panther If you like raspberry lemonade, this drink will be a hit. It is refreshing and doesn’t have a strong alcohol flavor.. It is made with grapefruit vodka, simple syrup, lemon juice, pink lemonade and raspberries. The outside seating here is great, as well, and offers a gorgeous view from up top. Honorable mention: The King Lives This drink is big enough to share, and is very sweet and delicious. It combines rum, banana liqueur, vanilla ice cream, big chunks of banana and peanut butter cups into a boozy treat worthy of the extra sugar intake. Vivo Italian Kitchen Top pick: Limoncello Collins This play on the traditional Tom Collins features dry gin, limoncello, simple syrup and lemon juice. Extra points for the amazing outdoor seating area that lets you enjoy the atmosphere — and people watch! The jam brings a slight sweetness to the drink that balances with the lime and vodka perfectly. Toothsome Chocolate Emporium and Savory Feast Kitchen Top pick: Old Chocolate Fashioned This drink is made with chocolate whiskey, cherry liqueur, chocolate, and orange bitters. The thing that really stands out is the balance between the chocolate and bourbon — this is something that would even appeal to those who aren’t big bourbon drinkers, but isn’t so sweet that it is a big departure from the Old Fashioned vibe you’d expect. It’s a great twist on a classic that is executed perfectly. Honorable mention: Peach Smash This is a bourbon enthusiast jackpot. It’s made with bourbon, peach puree, lime juice and aromatic bitters, which gives it a nice complexity while still maintaining a bourbon-forward flavor to it. NBC Sports Grill & Brew Top pick: Crimson Derby This fruity cocktail is a blend of rum, cherry liqueur, simple syrup, lime juice and pineapple juice and is a great option if you prefer a mixed drink to the huge beer selection NBC Sports Grill has. This is a clear fave if you want to settle in to watch something on game day and munch on pretzel while you drink. Honorable mention: Southern Margarita Moonshine is the star of this cocktail, along with triple sec, agave nectar, and fresh orange and lime juice. It makes for an excellent version of a margarita with a deeper flavor profile that is unique without seeming like a totally different drink. Antojitos Authentic Mexican Food Top pick: Bourbon Horchata The horchata and cinnamon balance out the bite of the bourbon and make for an authentic-tasting Mexican drink that you can’t find anywhere else. Plus, being serenaded by the mariachi band while you drink it really adds a whole new level of uniqueness to the experience. Honorable mention: Pineapple Fire and Ice This twist on a margarita is made with pineapple jalapeño tequila, agave nectar, fresh lime, and a pineapple ice pop. Pat O’Brien’s Top pick: Pat O’Brien’s Hurricane If you know, you know. Hurricanes are famous for a reason, and Pat O’Brien’s is the home of the original Hurricane, made with rum and hurricane mix (which is a combination of orange and passionfruit juice). If you’ve never had this drink from this bar, you’re missing out. It is a must-try for anyone who wants a classic cocktail made by the experts. Check out the inside of the bar for a fun dueling piano show and a secret outside seating spot to really get the full experience. Honorable mention: Fuzzy Leprechaun If the adorable name isn’t enough to pique your interest, this drink is made from the amazing combination of vodka, peach schnapps, blue curacao, and orange and pineapple juice. It is fruity and delicious without being overly sweet and is a good choice if you’ve had your fill of Hurricanes. Hard Rock Cafe Top pick: Rhythm & Rose’ Mule This take on the popular drink is creative and delicious. Combining vodka, rosé, passion fruit, green tea, lime and ginger beer, this mule has a crisp, slightly bitter taste that is perfect if you are looking for a cocktail that isn’t too sweet. Honorable mention: Purple Haze This drink is a doozy, made from vodka, gin and rum, with sweet and sour mix, lemon-lime soda, and raspberry liqueur. It is tasty and the liquor flavor definitely comes through on this one. Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Top pick: Mango Margarita This particular drink is made with house mango tequila, triple sec, orange juice, house margarita mix and agave. Honorable mention: Who’s to Blame This is the signature margarita of Margaritaville and is a classic combination of house tequila, triple sec, and house margarita mix. It is well-crafted and there’s no better place to sit back and sip this cocktail and take in the atmosphere. Bob Marley – A Tribute to Freedom Top pick: One love This cocktail, made from rum, blue curacao, blackberry liqueur and pineapple juice, is sweet and fruity, and is perfect for mentally transporting you to a warm beach in the Caribbean. Honorable mention: Uncle Wray’s Rum Punch Another sweet rum punch, this time featuring white rum, amaretti, crème de banana liqueur and orange and pineapple juices. Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Top pick: Rum Forrest Rum Some drinks find their signature nature in their ingredients, but some get it from their name. This one is a rum punch with two types of rum, pineapple juice, lime juice, orange juice, and grenadine. Honorable mention: Jenny’s Pink Lemonade This cocktail is citrus, mandarin, and raspberry vodkas, with passion fruit puree, cranberry juice, and lemonade . • New Hotel, Conference Center and more, to be built adjacent to AdventHealth in Ivanhoe Village

It's been revealed that a new building is to be constructed adjacent to AdventHealth in Ivanhoe Village, Orlando. The Gateway Building will be home to a 150-room hotel together with a conference center, a restaurant and retail space, plus other amenities. The structure will be located on the corner of East Princeton and North Orange Avenues, the gateway into AdventHealth’s Health Village in Orlando. The new 14-story development will be constructed by The ONIX Group, a hospitality, health care and commercial real estate services firm will also include medical offices leased by Advent Health. The hotel will be situated at the top of the Gateway building, and will offer a selection of spacious studios and one-bedroom suites. The suites will feature everything an individual needs to feel right at home – comfortable living rooms, stylish bathrooms and fully equipped kitchens. For further relaxation and wellbeing, a specially curated selection of meditation and mindfulness content will be available to stream in all rooms, and in the 24-hour fitness center. For guests seeking an extra level of fitness, specialty rooms will be available with top-of-the-line fitness equipment. Other hotel amenities will include a sky lobby with a magnificent view of downtown Orlando, an artificial turf activity lawn and an outdoor pool. Construction is expected to begin soon with an opening scheduled for fall 2026. The Gateway building is another step in building the long-term vision for the 172-acre Health Village. That vision calls for Health Village — the home of AdventHealth Orlando, AdventHealth for Women and AdventHealth for Children — to be not only a center for medical innovation and excellence, but also a dynamic community where people live, work and play. “We are thrilled to be partnering with the ONIX Group to bring high-end hotel lodging to Health Village, where families of patients, and visitors to the area from Central Florida and beyond, can stay in convenient comfort,” said Rob Deininger, CEO of AdventHealth Orlando. “Having loved ones close during a hospital stay helps our patients heal, not just in body, but also in mind and spirit. And at the same time, it helps ease the stress of medical treatment on patients’ families.” Below the hotel, medical offices that will house AdventHealth medical services will be located from the second through fourth floors. Cushman & Wakefield, a global real estate services firm, will lease commercial space from the fifth through eighth floors. A state-of-the-art conference facility will be located on the ground floor. This conference space is flexible and can be easily configured and scaled to any group’s needs. The Gateway conference experience will be built upon a high-definition, multimedia platform including a customizable video wall and international broadcasting capabilities. Two hundred and twenty-five construction jobs will be created as a result of the project. Upon completion, the hotel, conference center and commercial tenants will create 850 new jobs, bringing an estimated $65 million economic impact to the area. Construction of the 14-story, 270,846-square-foot building will begin in spring 2024, and the building is scheduled to open in fall 2026. The Gateway mixed-use structure is a $90 million investment. The project is being developed and owned by the ONIX Group. The architect of the project is NORR, and the general contractor is Batson-Cook. AdventHealth will be the anchor tenant and is leasing several floors in the building.
