First look at new mural coming to Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Magic Kingdom

Updated: Dec 10, 2023

With the transformation of Splash Mountain into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Walt Disney World, Walt Disney Imagineering has shared a first look at new mural coming to the attraction.

Imagineers are currently creating a vibrant mural to the side of the barn in the queue area of the attraction at Magic Kingdom, and we know have a complete look at the vibrant new art work.

Hailing from the vibrant state of Louisiana where creativity flows as freely as the Mississippi River, artist Malaika Favorite has managed to channel the state’s lively spirit and transform it into a masterpiece that will decorate the walls as part of the queue of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, an attraction inspired by the animated film, “The Princess and the Frog,” opening at Walt Disney World Resort next year.

Taking inspiration from the numerous murals and other works of art that decorate building exteriors throughout New Orleans, Princess Tiana’s desire to adorn the location with art is in keeping with the spirit that artwork is to be enjoyed and accessed by everyone.

When Disney was exploring how to introduce guests to the story of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure as they prepared to embark on the attraction, maintaining the authenticity of Princess Tiana’s experience as a young Black woman striving to achieve her dream in the soulful backdrop of New Orleans was one of our highest priorities.

It only makes sense that an extensive search for an artist who could bring Disney's vision to life brought the company to Malaika’s doorstep.

Malaika’s art currently graces the halls of the Baton Rouge Gallery with a striking collection that explores the cultural heritage of African Americans and who we ar as a people. Her artistic talent has been evident since she was old enough to hold a paintbrush. By the first grade, teachers were already paying her to commission pictures and posters. Her skills have only continued to blossom since then as she transforms canvas, wood, and metal into eye-catching displays.

Continuing the storyline from “The Princess and the Frog,” Malaika’s mural for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure features a collage of breathtaking scenes displayed on two of the building’s exterior walls as you enter the indoor queue. These scenes highlight Tiana’s professional journey and the creation of Tiana’s Foods. When Tiana was young, her father made her promise to “never, ever lose sight of what is really important,” and the mural will reflect those elements: family, friends, food, music, art, and bringing folks together.

When you visit Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, Disney want you to feel like you have truly stepped foot inside the next chapter of “The Princess and the Frog” in a way only Disney can bring to life.

Guests can experience this remarkable collaboration between Walt Disney Imagineering and Malaika Favorite in full when Tiana’s Bayou Adventure opens at Magic Kingdom Park in Florida in 2024.

At a young age, Tiana developed a deep passion for cooking, and began to dream of one day owning her own business. Her father, James, taught her that good food brings folks together.

One of the most exciting parts of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is that we’re going to see where Tiana’s life has taken her following the success of Tiana’s Palace, a restaurant she had dreamed of owning and worked so hard to make come true.

Walt Disney Imagineering have creating an original, next chapter story for Tiana. Combining her talents with those of the local community, Tiana has transformed an aging salt mine and built a beloved brand.

The endeavor began when Tiana purchased the salt mine and the area surrounding the large salt dome it operated from. With the help of her mother Eudora, Naveen, Louis and fellow owners of the cooperative, Tiana revived the old salt mine and the surrounding land, growing a wide array of vegetables, herbs and spices for her recipes.

This multi-faceted enterprise has turned the aging salt mine into a space that has come alive.

Complete with a boutique farm and both a working and teaching kitchen, Tiana’s Foods is where Tiana and her colleagues create all sorts of new products that they are bringing to the world, including a line of original hot sauces.

When it turns out there’s been a bit of a mix–up with the party preparations, Tiana invites us to meet her at Tiana’s Foods to help with the missing ingredient for the party.

When we arrive, we may see that Tiana spruced up the company’s facilities with vibrant art from local artists. Food for the party is being prepared and beignets are being loaded into crates for the celebration. All kinds of preparations are underway for the journey into the bayou with Tiana, along with new and familiar friends from the animated film.
