Ghost are kicking off 2026 on the road, bringing a second North American leg of their Skeletour to fans across North America. African American History in Orlando Eatonville Just 25 minutes north of Orlando’s main tourism districts, the historic town of Eatonville was incorporated in 1887, making it one of the first self-governing, all-Black municipalities in the U.S. — and the oldest still in existence today. The township’s core, the Eatonville Historic District, was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1998, drawing countless history and culture aficionados in the decades since. Around the turn of the 20th century, Eatonville attracted a family whose daughter would go on to great acclaim as an author: Zora Neale Hurston. Her best-known novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, is set in Eatonville and nearby communities. Parramore District The oldest and largest African American neighborhood in Orlando, the Parramore District is an area rich in culture, heritage and heart. Explore the district to see how Parramore residents are creating their own modern legacies. One of the district’s newest additions, Luminary Green Park, shines a light on individuals who made outstanding contributions to the Parramore-Holden community throughout their lifetime, honoring them with 12 luminary art installations. Located in the heart of downtown Orlando’s Creative Village, Luminary Green is the perfect place to stop and reflect on the past while looking forward to the future. Hannibal Square Hannibal Square is part of Winter Park, a charming community about 25 minutes north of Orlando’s tourism districts and close to Eatonville. It’s also home to the Hannibal Square Heritage Center, where you can explore the district’s origins as an African American community. Officially founded in 1881, Hannibal Square originally consisted of African Americans who worked for the South Florida Railroad and Winter Park’s wealthy families. On Oct. 12, 1887, it became the site of one of the country’s earliest Civil Rights marches when a group of Black residents crossed the town’s dividing railroad tracks to vote in the election that officially incorporated Winter Park, including Hannibal Square. What’s more, two Black residents were elected aldermen, serving from 1887 to 1893. Tinker Field Head to downtown Orlando to visit historic Tinker Field, a space next to Camping World Stadium that served as a baseball stadium from 1923 through 2015 and was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 2004. It was also the site of a moving Civil Rights speech delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1964. Black History Museums in Orlando Zora Neale Hurston Museum of Fine Arts 344 E Kennedy Blvd, Eatonville Better known as The Hurston , the museum is run by the nonprofit Preserve Eatonville Community and specializes in art by individuals of African descent. The museum offers maps for self-guided tours of the area where Zora grew up and also sets up guided tours. The modest town of 2,000 tucked just north of Orlando has preserved much of its historic roots, including Zora’s “home church,” St. Lawrence AME Church, 549 E. Kennedy Blvd., founded in 1881 and rebuilt in 1974, with 1920s-era murals depicting Eatonville residents at worship. Hannibal Square Heritage Center 642 W New England Ave, Winter Park Established in 2007 and only minutes from Eatonville, the Hannibal Square Heritage Center offers over 100 photos and oral histories highlighting local and national African-American experiences, with visiting exhibits that explore quilt making, urban art and other elements of black heritage and Southern folklore. Winter Garden Heritage Museum 21 E Plant St, Winter Garden The Winter Garden Heritage Museum features exhibits on Winter Garden’s Native American, early settler and citrus days, the museum boasts a permanent collection honoring the legacies of notable African American community members like Mildred Dixon, the first African American to serve on the city commission. Wells Built Museum of African American History & Culture 511 W South St, Orlando Erected by one of Orlando’s first black doctors in 1921, Wells’ Built Hotel served black travelers during segregation, hosting the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Thurgood Marshall and Jackie Robinson. Today, it’s a museum showcasing memorabilia and African art from Orlando’s black community. It includes a historic hotel guestroom with authentic furniture, beading and decorations straight out of the 1930s, when Zora spent time as an adult in the area. Orange County Regional History Center 65 E Central Blvd, Orlando Housed in a renovated 1927 courthouse in downtown Orlando, the museum features four floors of exhibits, including a permanent display of 14 paintings by a group of self-taught African-American artists known as The Highwaymen who sold their Florida landscape paintings from the trunks of their cars in the 1950s and 1960s. Most of the artists came from Fort Pierce, where Zora died in poverty in 1960. NASA, in partnership with The Astronauts Memorial Foundation, will host a Day of Remembrance ceremony at the Space Mirror Memorial at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex NASA, in partnership with the Astronauts Memorial Foundation and Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, will host NASA’s Day of Remembrance on Thursday, January 22. The ceremony will begin beneath Space Shuttle Atlantis and will honor all astronauts who have sacrificed their lives while furthering the cause of space exploration and discovery. This year marks 40 years since the Challenger tragedy. Following brief remarks beneath Space Shuttle Atlantis, the ceremony will move to the Space Mirror Memorial for a wreath laying. Attendees will be given flowers to pay respect to our fallen heroes. Remembering Challenger Just 73 seconds after launch on the morning of Jan. 28, 1986, a booster engine failed and caused the shuttle Challenger to break apart, taking the lives of all seven crew members.President Ronald Reagan eulogized the crew, quoting from John Gillespie Magee’s poem “High Flight”: “We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for the journey and waved goodbye and ‘slipped the surly bonds of earth’ to ‘touch the face of God.’” Remembering Columbia The seven-member crew of the STS-107 mission was just 16 minutes from landing on the morning of Feb. 1, 2003, when Mission Control lost contact with the shuttle Columbia. A piece of foam, falling from the external tank during launch, had opened a hole in one of the shuttle’s wings, leading to the breakup of the orbiter upon re-entry.Addressing the nation, President Bush said, “Mankind is led into the darkness beyond our world by the inspiration of discovery and the longing to understand. The Living Seas opened in 1986, and was re-themed in 2006 as The Seas with Nemo & Friends after the 2003 film Finding Nemo. For 40 years, guests at EPCOT have been diving into a world where curiosity runs as deep as the ocean. Today, The Seas with Nemo & Friends celebrates four decades of inspiring explorers to discover the wonders beneath the waves. Let’s dive in and explore this incredible journey! Originally opened as The Living Seas on Jan. 15, 1986, the pavilion offered more than just an aquarium — it was an immersive journey into ocean exploration. Guests began their adventure by boarding hydrolators, which created the sensation of traveling beneath the waves to Seabase Alpha , a futuristic undersea research center. Here, the experience unfolded through interactive exhibits and hands-on learning opportunities that made the mysteries of the deep accessible to everyone. Tom, Animal Policy & Content Director for Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment, who helped open The Living Seas, explained that the goal was to transport guests to the ocean floor so they could experience marine research firsthand. “With no large aquariums like this at the time, we had to be creative in engaging guests,” Tom said. “It paid off — we were inspired by the vision to create something as beautiful as the ocean.” Did you know the pavilion featured the largest indoor saltwater environment in North America when it first opened? And today, it’s still among the largest aquariums! Creating this incredible space wasn’t easy – it took teamwork, creativity, and a whole lot of commitment. In fact, the early development pushed the boundaries of innovation, leading to breakthroughs in filtration systems, habitat design, and even a custom-made saltwater mix. The pavilion introduced incredible innovations like reverse-flow filtration that recycled 5.7 million gallons of water and curved acrylic windows offering breathtaking underwater views. And it didn’t stop there: a pioneering closed-loop water system set a new benchmark for sustainable practices that influenced aquariums around the world. We are fortunate to have exceptional resources and a highly dedicated team that enables us to achieve outcomes that might otherwise seem impossible. No two days are the same, and I am continually learning from both my colleagues and the animals in our care.” The Seas plays a vital role in manatee conservation by providing short-term critical care to these gentle giants. Disney is one of several facilities nationwide participating in the Manatee Rescue & Rehabilitation Partnership (MRP) — a cooperative effort focused on rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing manatees back into the wild. Fun fact: Disney has successfully rehabilitated and released 30 manatees ! And more than 350 sea turtles have made their way to Walt Disney World — and back into the big blue! Rehabilitating and releasing sick and injured sea turtles is something Disney has long supported for years, and it’s not just vital for the species — it’s incredibly rewarding for cast members who are passionate about these animals.
