Florida Governor Ron DeSantis swept into Walt Disney property this morning to sign HB9, the bill which renames and reorganizes the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which allowed Walt Disney World to self-govern itself.

DeSntis choose Reedy Creek Fire Station to sign the bill and hold a press conference to announce his destruction of Reedy Creek.

Gov DeSantis began a press conference following his signing of the bill

with his bold announcement that “Today, the corporate kingdom finally comes to an end.”

Effectively this is Gov DeSantis showing himself in the heart of Walt Disney World, taking state control of Walt Disney World’s long time self governing district.

In addition to DeSantis declaring that “Today, the corporate kingdom finally comes to an end.” he pronounced that there was a “new sheriff in town.”

He reiterated that the law was in direct response to The Walt Disney Company opposing Florida’s homophobic “Don’t Say Gay” bill, referencing the California-based company’s attempts to “inject sexuality and impose agenda” in Florida.

He stated these are not the values the state of Florida wants to promote and highlighted the “safety of students and rights of parents.”

DeSantis also pointed out that the state has to treat Walt Disney World the same as other Florida theme parks.

At the press conference Gov DeSantis announced the people that he has personally hand pcked to run the new state controlled board.

DeSantis has appointed the following people to run the state-controlled board:

  • Martin Garcia, an attorney from Tampa, as Chairman

  • Sarasota County School Board member Bridget Ziegler

  • Attorney Brian Aungst

  • Attorney Michael Sasso

  • Chairman and CEO of The Gathering USA Ron Peri

The first meeting of the new board will be on Wednesday, March 8, 2023.

Choosing the Reedy Creek Fire Station to sign the bill, and to hold the press conference was a deliberate choice of Gov DesSantis, since the fire department has supported the state takeover.

The chief of the fire department spoke at the press conference and thanked DeSantis, speaking about the alleged mistreatment of firefighters at the hands of Disney.
